A mother from Long Island has confessed to the killing of her two-year-old twin daughters, who were smothered to death in June 2019.
On Monday, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office reported that Tenia Campbell, 28, from Medford, New York, admitted to committing two cases of first degree murder.
On 25 January, she will go back to court to be sentenced. It is anticipated that she will be given a prison term of 20 years to life.
Based on legal records and the defendant’s statement during her plea, it was reported that on June 27, 2019, Campbell’s mother dialed 911 to report that her daughter was driving a family van and making threats to harm the two children.
The authorities initiated an extensive hunt for Campbell and her two daughters, Jaida and Jasmine, in the regions of Medford and Montauk. The van was discovered at approximately 4pm.
Officers discovered Campbell outside of the van, where they also found the two deceased girls still in their seats. Later on, Campbell confessed to suffocating the girls to their demise.
According to NBC New York, Campbell exited the minivan, approached a nearby road, and instructed a responding officer to shoot him.
Steve Bellone, Executive of Suffolk County, referred to the event as something “unimaginable.” During an interview with NBC, he stated, “As a father of three young children, it’s unthinkable and incredibly tragic – the loss of Jasmine and Jaida, those two lovely young girls, yesterday.”
“Our hearts in Suffolk County are shattered today.”
According to a statement released on Monday after Campbell was found guilty, Raymond A. Tierney, the Suffolk County District Attorney, expressed his sadness and sorrow over this tragic case.
The two young girls relied on their mother for safety and affection, but instead she killed them.
The accused possesses something that the twin girls will never have again: their lives. However, the accused will now spend the majority of her life in prison.
