Robert Card, believed to be responsible for a mass shooting at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine, left a mysterious note behind.
On Friday, during a press conference, Maine’s Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck confirmed the recovery of a note following the attacks on Wednesday that resulted in 18 fatalities and 13 injuries.
Mr. Sauschuck declined to disclose the details of the note, implying that it may provide insight into a potential motive for the murders.
According to police sources, a “suicide note” was discovered during a search of Mr. Card’s residence, addressed to his son.
According to the sources, the note included the suspect’s ramblings and also included personal information, such as bank account details.
In addition to the written message, a representative from law enforcement informed CNN that they have also retrieved Mr. Card’s mobile phone.
Specifics of the report reveal that officials have acknowledged their lack of knowledge regarding the whereabouts of the alleged mass murderer, even after almost 36 hours since the shootings occurred.
Divers will now be joining the search, scouring the waterways close to the boat landing where Mr Card’s vehicle was found abandoned late on Wednesday night.
According to Mr. Sauschuck, the dive teams will be searching for evidence and “possible remains” in the Androscoggin River.
On Thursday night, there was a sudden and intense operation at Mr. Card’s residence in Bowdoin. Police from Maine and FBI agents were overheard yelling “FBI! Open the door!”
The intense situation, unfortunately, concluded without any apprehension or sighting of the US Army Reservist.
Mr. Card has been labeled as “armed and dangerous” and the public has been cautioned against approaching him if he is spotted.
Because of Mr. Card’s military background, he is highly skilled in handling firearms.
Mr. Card, who is 40 years old, has been a reservist in the United States Army since 2002. He is also a certified instructor for firearms.
He has not been deployed to any combat situations and currently holds the rank of Sergeant First Class as a Petroleum Supply Specialist.
Authorities stated that Mr. Card had recently expressed intentions to conduct a shooting at a National Guard location in Saco and had disclosed experiencing mental health problems, such as auditory hallucinations.
He stayed at a mental health facility for two weeks during the summer.
According to ABC News, Mr. Card’s family is reportedly cooperating with the investigation and have indicated that he may have been searching for an ex-girlfriend at one of the sites where the shooting took place.
The identity of Mr. Card’s former partner, and whether this played a role in the shooting, is uncertain. However, court records reveal that Mr. Card’s ex-wife divorced him in 2007.
In 2013, the court awarded joint parental rights to both parents for their child, who primarily resides with the mother.
While terrified residents across several counties in Maine are still hunkering down under shelter-in-place orders, loved ones are still learning the news that their family and friends were killed or wounded in the massacre.
A total of 18 individuals lost their lives in the shootings that occurred at two different locations on the evening of Wednesday.
Police in Maine reported that the shooter initially focused on a well-known bowling alley at around 7pm, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including one woman and six men.
According to authorities, minutes later the suspect proceeded to the Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant and began shooting.
Seven men were fatally shot inside the restaurant, and one man was shot and killed outside.
Three additional individuals passed away after being transported to a nearby medical facility.
Thirteen more individuals were harmed in the assaults, and their current state is not known.
The most recent victim identified is a 14-year-old boy who was at the bowling alley with his father on that fateful night.
Bill Young’s brother, Rob Young, informed Reuters that 14-year-old Aaron Young was at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley with his father for a bowling league event on Wednesday evening.
For several hours following the shooting, the family of Aaron and Bill were unaware of their loved ones’ whereabouts.
According to Rob’s statement to Reuters, he discovered that his brother and nephew were missing after the shooting. In order to assist his sister-in-law in locating them, he quickly boarded a flight from Baltimore to Lewiston.
According to Kim McConville, Bill’s cousin, the family was able to locate his cellphone at the bowling alley where the initial shooting occurred.
“Prior to learning of their deaths, she described the situation as complete chaos to the network.”
Individuals are not receiving the necessary information. It is available, but nothing new is being shared. The news conference does not provide any additional details.
On Thursday afternoon, the family received devastating news that the father and son were both killed during the attack, bringing an end to the search.
Although the search for the suspect continues, Mr. Sauschuck stated on Friday that officials are certain they will locate Mr. Card.
“We are putting in round-the-clock effort to bring this individual to face consequences for their actions,” he stated.
I am certain that we will bring this person to justice, by any means necessary.
