A man without a home, whose tent was intentionally burned while he was inside, is feeling “overwhelmed and extremely thankful” as members of the community have joined forces to raise funds for a new shelter.
A man, identified as Chris by locals and aged 35, was transported to the hospital for injuries caused by burns. Police were alerted to the incident in the Llanishen and Thornhill Green Belt in north Cardiff at 2:20 am on Tuesday.
After being appalled by the situation, Catherine Gorwill, a community worker focused on mental health, created a donation page to support the cause. She shared that Chris had set up his tent near a stream in a field while facing freezing temperatures.
She expressed her dismay to The Independent, saying that there is widespread outrage over the situation. She emphasized that their community does not condone such behavior, as it is a affluent and pleasant community.
Ms Gorwill stated that the new tent will be assembled on Saturday evening, and any additional funds collected will be used to assist Chris in buying a bike or finding new housing.
“He is currently moving restlessly due to his intense fear of it happening once more,” she stated. “His hands have been scorched and his face bears burns.”
Ms. Gorwill initially aimed to raise only £100 through her GoFundMe campaign in order to replace Chris’s tent. However, she was pleasantly surprised when the campaign exceeded its goal and raised over £1,800.
“I initially organized the fundraiser with the intention of replacing his tent, but I never anticipated it would generate such a large amount. As someone who has worked with vulnerable adults, I was horrified by the thought of someone violently targeting a vulnerable individual.”
I am incredibly grateful to all those who have generously donated.
The money has been used to buy a stronger tent. The rest of the money will be used to assist with any necessary expenses when his Outreach Team reaches out, hopefully with updates on finding suitable housing.
According to Ms. Gorwill, Chris, who has been without a home since his twenties, expressed feeling “overwhelmed and grateful.”
She mentioned that he is a reserved and confident individual who prefers to avoid the spotlight. He was pleasantly surprised by the enthusiastic reactions he received and kept repeating, “Is this really happening?”
“He is receiving an overwhelming amount of donations, which is fantastic.”
The police in Cardiff issued a statement regarding the incident, stating that they are currently investigating a fire that occurred at a tent in Llanishen at 2:22am on Tuesday, January 23.
A man who is 35 years old received medical treatment for burn injuries and has been released from the hospital.
Investigations are currently being conducted to determine the origins and details surrounding the fire, as well as whether it was caused accidentally or intentionally.
