The charges against a man, who was alleged to have driven a hearse onto a football field resulting in the cancellation of a game, have been dismissed.
The defendant, Darren Kay, aged 29 with no permanent residence, was absent from South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court where it was announced that the charges against him were being dropped.
Stephanie Cook, the prosecuting attorney, stated that the prosecution acknowledges that there is a low likelihood of obtaining a guilty verdict.
The lawyer representing Robin Ford argued that there is insufficient proof, and there never has been, to support the accusations.
The judges approved the presented arguments and stated that the case will be classified as “discontinued”.
On July 21 of last year, Mr. Kay was accused of committing vandalism on the field and gate of Dunston Football Club.
During a pre-season friendly between Dunston and Gateshead, spectators were surprised to see a hearse and a Subaru being driven onto the field during half-time.
The video posted on social media portrayed cars being driven in circular patterns on the field, followed by a group of men in balaclavas exiting the vehicles and stepping onto the playing area.
The game between the two teams from lower leagues was cancelled.
Additionally, Mr. Kay was accused of having the intention to cause inconvenience, fear, or unease among the audience members.
