The biggest cruise ship in the world is getting ready to embark.
On January 27, 2024, the newest ship from Royal Caribbean, called ‘Icon of the Seas’, sets sail on its inaugural voyage.
It is set to surpass the ‘Wonder of the Seas’, another Royal Caribbean cruise ship currently holding the record for being the largest in the world.
The vessel known as Icon of the Seas boasts 18 decks for passengers, seven pools for swimming, and more than 40 dining and drinking establishments. It has a capacity of 5,610 guests and a gross tonnage of 250,800.
The opulent cruise ship also offers eight designated areas, referred to as “neighbourhoods,” that provide unique experiences, entertainment, and dining choices. With a focus on setting new records, these neighbourhoods include several firsts: Thrill Island includes the biggest water park on a cruise ship, the first open free-fall slide on the ocean, and the tallest drop slide in the industry.
The vessel also includes Chill Island, which boasts pools with views of the ocean and a bar serving frozen cocktails. Additionally, The Hideaway is where you’ll find the first ever suspended infinity pool on a ship, along with a multi-level sun deck equipped with whirlpools and a beach bar.
Additional communities within the area are The Hideaway, Surfside, and Aquadome, which features an AquaTheater.
The cruise is geared towards families, offering the latest additions of the Family Infinite Balcony and Surfside Family Suite, along with the luxurious Ultimate Family Townhouse which boasts a mailbox and charming white picket fence.
The Icon of the Seas will continuously sail from Miami for seven nights, with each trip including a stop at CocoCay in The Bahamas. This will be the first ship in the company to use fuel cell technology and be powered by liquified natural gas, a clean burning fuel, making it their most environmentally friendly ship to date.
Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, said: “Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of delivering memorable experiences and our next bold commitment to those who love to vacation. Now more than ever, families and friends are prioritising experiences where they can bond and enjoy their own adventures.”
