A guitar used by renowned British musician Eric Clapton during his time in the rock band Cream has sold for the highest price at a recent rock ‘n’ roll auction.
On Thursday evening, the 1964 Gibson SG electric guitar was the star of the Worn And Torn: Rock N Roll Iconic Guitars And Memorabilia auction, selling for $1,270,000 (£1,023,000).
This guitar is famously known as Clapton’s Fool guitar, as it features a unique psychedelic design created by the founders of the Dutch art group, Marijke Koger and Simon Posthuma, also known as “The Fool”.
According to Julien’s Auctions, The Fool went on to work with numerous well-known musicians, such as creating outfits for The Beatles when they performed “All You Need Is Love” on television and in their movie “Magical Mystery Tour” in 1967.
According to reports, Clapton was given the guitar by George Harrison of The Beatles after Cream’s 1966 album Fresh Cream was released. This became his main instrument for creating the iconic “woman tone” which has greatly influenced the rock genre. The auction house confirmed this information.
Other items worn by British celebrities were sold at the auction, such as a blue and white blazer worn by Sir Elton John in the music video for his 1984 single “Passengers” which was purchased for $5,200 (£4,192).
The 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which belonged to and was driven by Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, was sold for $227,500 (£183,374).
John McVie’s bass guitar, used in the official music videos for “Little Lies” and “Seven Wonders” from the album Tango In The Night by Fleetwood Mac, was sold for $13,000 (£10,479).
At an auction, a personalized black military-style jacket with gold decorations that was worn by the late American musician Michael Jackson during his 1992-1993 Dangerous World Tour was sold for $101,600 (£81,893).
Julien’s Auctions is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a collection of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia, featuring a guitar played by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s final show at Terminal Einz in Munich in March 1994.
The blue Fender Mustang electric guitar, expected to sell for $1-2 million, was played during Nirvana’s tour in 1993-1994, shortly before Cobain’s passing.
