The homes of two top New York fire chiefs were raided by the FBI as part of an investigation into corruption.
The New York Times reported that the inquiry focuses on whether Brian Cordasco and Anthony Saccavino received a $100,000 payment in exchange for expediting building inspections.
Both of the FDNY chiefs have allegedly not faced any accusations of misconduct and have not been charged with any illegal activities. It is uncertain if either of them have obtained legal representation.
On Thursday, the offices at the department’s Brooklyn headquarters were searched and closed off.
The Fire Commissioner, Laura Kavanagh, announced that both Mr. Cordasco and Mr. Saccavino have been placed on modified duty as a proactive measure.
Ms Kavanagh stated that the primary concern of the F.D.N.Y. is the safety of New Yorkers and she expects all members of the department to behave accordingly.
On Thursday, there were raids conducted as part of an inquiry into Mayor Eric Adams. He has been accused of collaborating with FDNY officials to speed up the process of building inspections as a favor to influential real estate developers and donors in politics.
A representative from the mayor’s office informed The Independent that the inquiry regarding Mr. Cordasco and Mr. Saccavino was not connected to Mr. Adams.
The spokesperson, Charles Lutvak, stated that City Hall learned about the operation after receiving a notification from FDNY yesterday morning. He also mentioned that FDNY is working with the Department of Investigation and there is currently no evidence linking anyone at City Hall to the operation.
