According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, 18 people have been killed and 130 injured in an attack by Russian missiles on Ukraine’s two largest cities.
On Tuesday morning, Russian troops launched attacks on over 200 locations in the cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv, causing buildings to collapse and trapping numerous individuals under debris.
During his evening video statement, Mr. Zelensky reported that approximately 40 missiles were fired at Ukrainian cities. While a notable portion of these missiles were successfully intercepted, a significant number still managed to strike their intended targets.
According to the president, the number of casualties is likely to increase due to the impact on 139 homes of civilians. He also mentioned that a rescue mission is currently ongoing in Kharkiv.
President Zelensky referred to the state of modern Russia as viewing ordinary life as a danger. He also compared the state to a common terrorist.
The mayor of Kharkiv reported that a total of eight individuals, including an eight-year-old girl, have lost their lives in the city near the Russian border. The city has been targeted multiple times during the ongoing 23-month long war.
Emergency services reported that a total of 22 individuals, which included four children, were injured in various districts in the capital city of Kyiv.
According to 21-year-old resident Daniel Boliukh, there was a loud noise that prompted his mother to run outside and urge them to evacuate. They all followed her into the corridor.
“Afterwards, we stepped out onto the balcony and witnessed numerous buildings engulfed in flames.”
The strikes in Kyiv caused damage to apartment buildings, medical facilities, and schools, according to reports from emergency services. The United Nations resident coordinator, Denise Brown, stated that the strikes also impacted areas near their office.
The attack caused significant destruction in Kharkiv, as confirmed by regional Governor Oleh Synehubov who reported over 100 tall buildings damaged in the initial two waves of assault.
According to him, there were three separate incidents in the evening where an apartment building and other structures were hit, resulting in seven injuries.
A video posted by the Ukrainian military depicted a pair observing as a section of an apartment complex was engulfed in flames. Emergency responders labored into the night, recovering bodies from the debris of collapsed structures.
According to the general staff of Ukraine, their military successfully intercepted 22 out of 44 missiles of different kinds during the attacks.
According to the military administration, around 20 missiles were intercepted above Kyiv.
The governor of Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, reported that Russian planes continuously attacked the area all day. According to officials, two individuals lost their lives. The governor also stated that one person was fatally injured in the southeastern city of Pavlohrad.
In the past two months, Russian forces have increased their missile attacks on cities in Ukraine. According to Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, more than 600 missiles and approximately 1,000 drones have been utilized by Putin’s forces.
Some analysts and officials have reported that Russian forces employed a tactic of using a combination of air and land-based missiles to attack Ukraine, making it harder to intercept.
The situation arises from Ukraine’s worries that their requests for weapons are not being adequately fulfilled by their Western allies due to a shift in focus towards the recent conflict in the Middle East.
The chief of the presidential administration, Andriy Yermak, shared a video depicting devastation in Kharkiv and declared, “Kharkiv is more than just a ‘fortress’. We require arms!”
Last week, Ukrainian forces began attacking Russian energy infrastructure, such as oil depots and terminals.
On Sunday, Moscow accused Kyiv of causing the death of 27 individuals through shelling in the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. The governor of the region described the attack on a crowded market as “shocking,” but Ukrainian forces denied involvement.
