An intense cold front from the Arctic will persistently move through the United States on Monday and remain until at least midweek. This will extend the already freezing temperatures that broke records in certain regions and poses a potential disruption to daily routines, such as an NFL playoff game and the first primary election in Iowa.
The National Weather Service has predicted that wind chills will cause temperatures to drop as low as 30 degrees below zero in areas from the Northern Rockies to northern Kansas and Iowa. This will test the resilience of caucusgoers who are willing to endure the severe cold on Monday.
Former President Donald Trump urged his supporters on Sunday to not stay at home, saying, “Even if you’re feeling very sick, you have to go out and vote. And even if you die after voting, it’s worth it.”
Severe storms in the Arctic region caused at least four fatalities and caused power outages for tens of thousands of people in the Northwest. The storms also brought snow to the South and heavily impacted the Northeast, leading to blizzard-like conditions that resulted in the postponement of the NFL playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills, which was set to take place in frigid Buffalo, New York.
The scheduled game on Monday was previously cancelled on Sunday.
Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York and a Buffalo native, shared a video on X (previously known as Twitter) displaying blizzard-like conditions.
“At this moment in Orchard Park, the game that was supposed to begin moments ago is facing poor conditions,” she stated on Sunday afternoon. “There is limited visibility and dangerously strong winds.”
The Bills extended an invitation to dedicated supporters to assist in clearing out snow from Highmark Stadium, with a compensation of $20 per hour for their efforts.
“We were able to make some headway with shoveling, but not a significant amount,” stated Logan Eschrich, a storm chaser who traveled to Buffalo to contribute.
It is uncertain whether the show will continue on Monday afternoon. According to the weather service, there is a prediction of intense snow from Lake Erie moving towards upstate New York, which will contribute to the already 1 to 2 feet of snow covering the area. The snow was falling at a rate of 2 inches per hour.

Temperatures in areas spanning from the Rockies to the Ohio Valley may experience a significant decline of 25 to 40 degrees below average.
As the temperature dropped in Texas, the power grid operator urged residents to conserve electricity on Monday morning due to the unusually high demand caused by the cold weather. In 2021, a severe freeze left millions of Texans without power, but state officials are now confident in the reliability of the grid as another cold front approaches.
There is a forecast for freezing rain in some areas of the Southern Plains and Southern Appalachians.
Parts of Florida will also experience severe weather, as forecasts indicate that there will be rain and thunderstorms from Monday to Tuesday.
Over 120,000 households and commercial buildings in Oregon were left without power, primarily in the Portland metropolitan region, due to a combination of strong winds and wintry precipitation causing trees and power lines to fall.
Over the weekend, a community south of Portland experienced the toppling of approximately 100 trees. Tragically, one man lost his life when a tree fell on his house. Two others passed away due to suspected hypothermia, and a fourth individual died in a fire caused by a tree falling onto an RV.
Portland General Electric released a statement stating that due to the significant damage and large number of power outages, restoration efforts will continue throughout the week. Customers are advised to make necessary plans. The company also mentioned monitoring a potential weather system that may bring strong winds and icy conditions on Tuesday.
On Sunday, widespread power outages were reported in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, affecting tens of thousands of people. In Nebraska, the Omaha Public Power District has requested that customers conserve electricity in order to avoid outages.
