The city of Sydney, located in Australia, celebrated the arrival of the new year with a spectacular firework display that lasted 12 minutes. The show, which took place around the harbour, was witnessed by thousands of people.
Throughout the day, a large number of people had gathered in order to secure a good spot before the iconic display. The display involves launching eight tonnes of pyrotechnics from both the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
New Zealand began their festivities at 11am GMT with a fireworks show in Auckland, which was followed by the following event.
At 10am GMT, the small Pacific island countries of Tonga, Samoa, and Kiribati were the first to say goodbye to 2023 as it became midnight in their time zones.
Even though the UK is expecting bad weather, a large number of people are still expected to gather in London and line the streets before midnight. The countdown will be initiated by Big Ben.
Baker Island in the central Pacific Ocean will be the final location to enter the year 2024, while Kiribati will have already entered 2 January.

As 2023 begins in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, there are many other countries still awaiting the start of the New Year with several hours remaining.
Among those next to be celebrating is China, who will mark midnight at 4pm GMT, followed by Indonesia an hour later. While the eastern parts of Russia have moved into 2024, Moscow will not ring in the New Year until 9pm GMT.
Following the UK and various European nations, several South American countries, such as Brazil, will observe their celebrations at 3am GMT. The US East Coast will then follow at 5am GMT.
Baker Island in the central Pacific Ocean will be the final place to ring in 2024, at 12pm GMT.
In 2024, Japan and South Korea will be the next countries to celebrate the new year.
In the past few minutes, multiple nations have commenced their celebrations for the beginning of 2024 with displays of fireworks and parades.
At 3pm GMT, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Timor-Leste, and Palau all welcomed the New Year.
A ceremony involving the ringing of a bell and a countdown was held at Bosingak Pavilion in Seoul, while a traditional bell-ringing ceremony was observed by a crowd at a temple in central Tokyo.

Emilio Fernandez, age 22, is accompanied by his parents, Catherine and Manuel Fernandez, aged 58 and 59, as well as his sister Luna, aged 31, and his four-year-old nephew, Amani.
He stated that their departure, originally scheduled for Saturday evening, was cancelled in the afternoon. They were greatly concerned since it was crucial for them to return to their country to celebrate New Year’s Eve there. As a result, they are still anxious as they are uncertain if they will be able to leave.
His mother mentioned that staying in London, even for a short period of time, is quite costly.

Weather conditions in the UK for celebrating New Year
Tens of thousands are expected to gather in the streets this evening, but forecasters predict that 2023 will end with unsettled weather conditions due to low pressure causing rain showers for those celebrating New Year/Hogmanay.
While the showers will cover a large area, there is a higher chance for eastern regions of England and Scotland to escape the heavy rain. Windy conditions will continue in Wales and southern England, with a previous warning for strong gusts.
