Passengers recounted the terrifying experience on a Boeing 787 flight where the plane descended suddenly, causing injuries to at least 50 people and leaving one in serious condition.
Midway through the flight from Sydney to Auckland on Monday, a sudden drop by LATAM Airlines caused passengers to be jolted from their seats and collide with the plane’s ceiling.
The airline, along with a health service organization in New Zealand, reported that the aircraft underwent powerful shaking, resulting in 10 passengers and three cabin crew members being transported to a hospital. The South American carrier stated that an investigation into the cause is underway.
On Monday afternoon, the scheduled flight arrived at Auckland airport with a total of 263 passengers and nine cabin crew members on board.
According to a representative from Hato Hone St John, around 50 people were treated at the airport. One individual is in critical condition while the others sustained mild to moderate injuries. A passenger, Brian Jokat, reported that the plane suddenly experienced severe turbulence, causing passengers to be thrown out of their seats and hit the plane’s roof before being tossed down the aisles.
The reason for the abrupt shift in the flight path of LA800 could not be determined right away. Experts in aviation safety suggest that most plane crashes are the result of a combination of factors that must be carefully examined.
“According to Jokat, there were damaged roof sections due to people being tossed around and breaking through plastic panels on the aisle. Additionally, there were multiple individuals with head injuries and bleeding.”
He stated that physicians among the passengers of the aircraft offered first aid materials and neck supports to those who sustained serious injuries.
FlightRadar24 reported that the 8-year-old Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was en route to Santiago, with a layover in Auckland.
LATAM Airlines announces a new flight departing from Auckland to Chile on Tuesday.
The value of Boeing stocks decreased by approximately 4% during the morning trading in the United States.
In 2008, numerous individuals sustained injuries from a wide-body jet, specifically an Airbus 330 operated by Qantas Airways. The aircraft experienced a sudden drop due to inaccurate information from its flight data computer while en route to Perth, Australia.
Boeing is currently collecting more information and offering assistance to the airline. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Safety Board have yet to respond to requests for feedback.
The Wall Street Journal stated on Saturday that the US Department of Justice is conducting a criminal probe into a mid-air cabin-panel malfunction on an Alaska Airlines flight in January involving the 737 MAX aircraft.
