A traveler shared their response when another traveler tried to convince them to trade their first-class seat on the airplane.
A Reddit user shared a story about their experience on a recent flight. They were seated in a business class window seat and preparing for a long flight when a woman asked if they would be willing to switch seats with her husband so they could sit together. The user mentioned they were traveling alone.
The Reddit user was curious about the whereabouts of the woman’s husband and inquired about his current seat. The woman responded that he was seated in row 25, which was located in the economy section. However, since the woman was attempting to get her husband a better seat without paying for it, the Reddit user politely declined to switch seats.
The individual, who was traveling in business class, shared on Reddit (but has since deleted the post) that the woman was visibly distressed upon not receiving the seat and was surprised that she couldn’t sit next to her spouse on the flight.
I recommended that she exchange seats with the person sitting next to her husband in order for them to sit together. She scoffed and informed me that she had purchased a first class ticket. I gave a small smile and replied that I had also purchased one. The post, which has now been removed, stated this.
Numerous individuals have responded to the post by offering their support for the passenger who refused to give up their seat. One comment referred to the woman who requested a seat swap as a “moron” and expressed disbelief that she believed her tactic would be successful.
“Regrettably, I observed a ‘TikTok Travel Influencer’ promoting this as a ‘hack’,” another user commented. “I dislike everything about TikTok.”
“I paid a lot for first-class seats on a long flight. I refuse to give them up for someone who feels entitled,” a third commenter shared, echoing the passenger’s sentiment. “I don’t care if they cry, I’m not giving up my seat.”
A different individual commented, stating that they have observed someone successfully use this method to obtain a better seat without having to pay extra. They were frustrated on behalf of the person who did this. The person in question was an elderly woman and a young couple asked her for her upgraded seat. The woman gave it to them and after she left, the young girl who had been crying suddenly stopped. The commenter believes that if you want to sit together, you should give up your upgraded seat and take less desirable seats instead. That is the end of the story.
A few people commented that the woman may have never purchased a first-class ticket initially, but instead received a seat upgrade. This resulted in her husband not being upgraded as well. One comment stated, “Since she didn’t pay for first class, she was upgraded, but her husband wasn’t.”
The post was made in response to a couple who declined to relinquish their reserved seats for children.
Amanda Mancino-Williams posted on the social media platform X (previously known as Twitter) to recount her journey on a crowded train from Cheltenham to Nottingham in the United Kingdom. The train had seats arranged in groups of four, with a table between two seats. She had reserved one group for herself and her children, but upon arrival, she found an elderly couple occupying two of the seats. In a recently resurfaced thread from 2019, she alleged that the couple refused to move, stating that her reserved tickets were insignificant.
