“It was a heartbreaking sight to see a mother collapse in anguish upon learning that her beloved son had been stabbed in the head. The added shock of receiving a bill of over £11,000 for his NHS medical treatment only added to her distress.”
Tharel Thompson arrived in the UK just three days prior, on a trip to see his family. However, shortly after 2am on Sunday, February 11th, he was assaulted while at Walkabout nightclub in Reading.
The individual, who is currently 28 years old, was quickly transported to a hospital and is currently in critical condition due to a knife injury to their right temple which penetrated their brain.
Because he does not have insurance and is not a citizen of Britain, his family received a large bill shortly after arriving at John Radcliffe Hospital. The amount is expected to increase due to the expenses of further necessary medical care.
Yvonne Thompson, the mother, shared that she had only been at the location for a few hours before the bill was presented to her. However, the cost is still unknown and it is uncertain how long her child will have to stay in the hospital. Rehabilitation, both physical and psychological, will be necessary for his recovery.
In the past, Ms. Thompson had traveled from her home country of Barbados to the UK when her son was only five years old. Recently, when her son expressed a desire to go back and visit his cousins and extended family, Ms. Thompson was overjoyed.
The lighting specialist had been recovering from a motorcycle crash and was eagerly anticipating a vacation.
While accompanying his father’s relatives in Reading city center, he sustained severe injuries and is currently in a medically induced coma, experiencing extensive brain pressure.
“After waking up, I noticed multiple missed calls from his father. Shortly after, his cousin informed me of the news,” she recounted. “I couldn’t believe what had transpired and was left confused and jolted.”
She quickly scheduled a flight for London that same night and went directly to the hospital. Upon arrival, she was met with a terrifying sight.
I was in disbelief when I saw my only child hooked up to numerous machines with wires. He underwent surgery for several hours to address the bleeding, and his condition remains very serious.
Krisma Anthony, 23, and Jahlil Chales, 22, have both been accused of attempted murder and are currently in custody. They are scheduled to appear at Reading Crown Court on March 11.
The Thompson family is now confronted with the daunting task of gathering thousands of dollars to cover Mr. Thompson’s care, and they are facing an uncertain future due to the severity of his injuries.
“According to his mother, Tharel has a free-spirited nature. He is deeply committed to his interests and places importance on his appearance. He enjoys activities such as jet skiing and riding motorcycles, and demonstrates a strong work ethic without ever complaining.”
He constantly expresses his love for me daily. After undergoing two surgeries, medical professionals have advised his family to wait for the pressure to decrease before attempting to wake him up.
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to gather the necessary resources for his treatment. Within a few days, it has received an astonishing £20,000 in donations.
“I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have contributed thus far,” stated Ms. Thompson. “On behalf of the hospital staff and our loved ones in Barbados, it holds great significance.”
