Live coverage of breaking news about Donald Trump: E Jean Carroll expresses happiness after winning $83 million in a defamation case.

E Jean Carroll leaves the courtroom following a court ruling that orders Trump to pay $83.3 million for making defamatory statements.

After a jury awarded an $83 million verdict against Donald Trump on Friday, E Jean Carroll cried tears of joy and embraced her attorneys in a New York courtroom.

Ms. Carroll chose not to comment as she exited the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan. However, she made her feelings clear with a single word post on X.

The ex-columnist for Elle expressed their joy with the word “elation”!

Following a high-profile trial marked by confrontational exchanges between Mr. Trump’s defense attorney, Alina Habba, and Judge Lewis Kaplan, the ex-president was instructed to provide $11 million towards a program to restore the writer’s reputation. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $7.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages.

Donald Trump was absent from the courtroom when the decision was announced, leaving Lower Manhattan in his motorcade just before the verdict was delivered. Earlier that day, he abruptly left the court during closing statements but came back for the defense’s final summary.

At the same time, Judge Kaplan cautioned the jurors to not reveal their involvement in this jury, while the ex-president expressed anger on the internet.

The ex-president gave a brief testimony on Thursday, following strict limitations on what he could discuss due to a previous jury’s ruling that he was responsible for sexually assaulting Ms. Carroll.

George Conway expressed that he experienced a strong emotional response.

George Conway, a lawyer with conservative beliefs and a strong critic of Trump, expressed feeling deeply affected when the former president was instructed to pay $83 million in compensation to E Jean Carroll.

Mr Conway played a pivotal role in the defamation case coming to trial. He introduced Ms Carroll to her lead attorney Roberta Kaplan, a fact the former Elle advice columnist referred to during her testimony.

During a CNN interview, Mr. Conway expressed feeling overwhelmed upon receiving the jury’s verdict.

He informed CNN’s Kaitlin Collins that he had an intense emotional response.

“I was not taken aback, as I had always believed that a fair ruling would fall within the range of 75 to 100 million, or even higher. However, witnessing justice being served in this particular instance was a very emotional experience for me. In fact, I had to step out for a walk in order to collect myself.”

The award of $83 million to Ms Carroll, according to Mr Conway, was “astonishing” but deserved.

This reminds me of the famous quote, often attributed to Dr. Martin Luther King, which states that the path to justice may be long, but it ultimately leads towards justice.

“Lawsuits are a necessary aspect of this process. They can be lengthy and time-consuming, whether in civil or criminal cases. However, when justice is served, it is often impactful.”

Although Donald Trump has been vocal about immigration policies and the border, he has not made any comments about the $83 million defamation verdict against him.

In the time following a jury’s decision to award an astounding $83 million in a defamation case against Donald Trump, the candidate for president has shared multiple updates on Truth Social regarding the border, Nikki Haley, and various political endorsements.

However, he has remained noticeably quiet regarding E Jean Carroll, despite consistently criticizing the writer during the trial.

Donald Trump posted multiple negative articles about Nikki Haley and boasted about his win in the Iowa caucus.

He expressed anger that a poorly negotiated border deal is worse than having no deal at all.

However, other than one post expressing discontent with the flawed and unjust justice system, he has not addressed the ruling or Ms Carroll.

Nikki Haley reacts to $83 million judgment for defamation.

Nikki Haley expressed that “America has room for improvement” following the ruling that her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, must pay $83 million in damages for defaming E Jean Carroll.

Ms Haley shared on X that Mr Trump’s legal disputes were diverting attention away from the important matters that the United States is currently facing.

Ms. Haley stated in her Friday night post that Donald Trump is seeking to become the assumed Republican nominee and the topic of discussion is the $83 million in losses.

“We are not discussing resolving the border issue or addressing inflation. America has the potential to surpass both Donald Trump and Joe Biden.”

Rewritten: Trump has been ordered to pay $83 million in defamation damages to E Jean Carroll.

The jury, consisting of nine members, granted Ms Carroll $65 million as retribution for punitive damages. This is on top of the $18 million she received in compensatory damages after the defendant was held responsible for sexual abuse. He had also spread false information about her allegations, causing her to receive abusive messages and even death threats.

On Friday, a decision was made after approximately three hours of discussion during a heated two-week civil trial at a federal court in Manhattan. Mr Trump’s legal team strongly contested Ms Carroll’s claims while the ex-president continuously criticized and possibly slandered her in public speeches and numerous postings on his Truth Social platform.

Trump lawyers claim Fani Willis injected racial bias into Georgia case.

The defense lawyers representing Mr. Trump filed a complaint on Thursday claiming that Ms. Willis showed prejudice based on race in the case and disregarded her duties as a prosecutor. They referred to accusations that she hired a prosecutor whom she was romantically involved with.
