An American Airlines flight from the Dominican Republic to Charlotte, United States had a female passenger who passed away due to illness.
A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that on Wednesday, a 41-year-old woman on Flight 2790 became ill and caused the flight to be diverted to Providenciales International Airport in the Turks and Caicos due to her “medical needs.”
The police force of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands stated that they were notified at 6:12pm by the Air Traffic Control Tower about a medical emergency involving a 41-year-old individual receiving CPR.
The individual was taken to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre and ultimately passed away. Authorities have announced that an autopsy will be performed in order to determine the cause of this individual’s death.
American Airlines stated that first responders greeted the plane and one passenger was transported to the nearby hospital. The flight then proceeded to Charlotte on the next day.
According to Flight Aware, an internet-based flight monitoring tool, the flight was rerouted to Providenciales International Airport and arrived at approximately 6:18pm on Wednesday.
WXIN-TV reported that the woman from Indiana, whose name has not been disclosed, has not been made known to the public.
The occurrence happened shortly following the death of a British traveler aboard a LATAM flight to Chile this past Saturday.
The incident happened during the journey of a 59-year-old man from the Falkland Islands to Punta Arenas, a city in southern Chile.
The man died before the airplane reached its destination. Officials stated that there was no evidence to indicate foul play, as his wife informed them that he had pre-existing health conditions.
An autopsy was scheduled for this week and was anticipated to verify that he passed away from natural causes.
