As the temperature drops during the autumn season, households in Britain may find themselves reluctantly turning on their central heating. This is due to the memory of high electricity and gas bills from the previous year.
Although Ofgem’s Energy Price Cap has decreased significantly since its implementation, inflation continues to be a problem at 6.7 percent and many individuals are facing financial difficulties due to the expensive prices of goods and services.
Members of the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee have already urged the government led by Rishi Sunak to provide assistance to struggling households during the upcoming winter season.
The chair of the committee, Angus Brendan MacNeil, cautioned in September that as the nights grow longer, many vulnerable individuals will be plagued by painful memories of the sacrifices they had to make last year to afford high energy expenses.
Approximately 25% of individuals currently have outstanding energy debts from the previous winter. As the upcoming winter presents an even greater challenge, it is high time for the government to provide assistance.
A significant form of assistance that is currently accessible is the Warm Home Discount program implemented by the government in 2011. This program provides a reduction of £150 on energy bills for eligible recipients.
Between October 2023 and March 2024, a single discount will be automatically applied to your bill if you are eligible in England and Wales. To be eligible, you must receive the guarantee credit element of pension credit or have a low income and high energy costs.
If you meet all of the conditions listed below as of August 13, 2023, you will be eligible in the first scenario.
-
Your power provider is included in the program mentioned on this roster.
-
Your name or your partner’s name is listed on your electricity bill.
-
If you or your partner receive pension credit’s guarantee credit element, even if you also receive savings credit, you are eligible.
If you have a low income, you are eligible if you receive any of the following benefits that are based on financial need:
- Housing benefit
- Income-related employment and support allowance
-
A type of allowance for jobseekers based on their income.
- Income support
- gives you a reward every week
The savings credit component of pension credit provides a weekly reward.
- Universal Credit
You may also be eligible if your total household income is lower than a specified amount and you receive any of the following:
- Child tax credit
- Working tax credit
To qualify for the program, your property must have a high energy cost score, which is calculated according to its type, age, and total floor area.
For Scotland, the requirements are similar – either qualifying for the credit element of pension credit or having a low income. However, for the latter, you may need to apply through your energy company.
Usually, there is no need for you to submit an application as the discount will be automatically applied to your account.
If you meet the requirements, you will be sent a letter confirming your eligibility sometime between October 2023 and January 2024.
If you think you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount but did not receive a letter, please contact the helpline at 0800 030 9322 before February 29th, 2024. The helpline is available on weekdays from 8am to 6pm.
You may also send a letter to: 110552 Warm Home Discount Scheme, PO Box 26965, Glasgow G1 9BW.
