Nikki Haley, a Republican running for president, has addressed comments made by former president Donald Trump in which he mistakenly referred to her as Nancy Pelosi. Haley expressed concerns about Trump’s mental fitness for the role.
During a campaign event on Friday, the 77-year-old Mr. Trump discussed the January 6 riot and criticized Ms. Haley for her perceived failure to address the security issues as protesters entered the US Capitol. It should be noted that Ms. Haley has never served in Congress and it seemed as though the former president was actually referring to Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House.
During the rally, Mr. Trump stated that Nikki Haley is responsible for security. He mentioned that they offered her a choice of 10,000 individuals, including soldiers and National Guard, but she declined.
Despite Ms. Haley’s role as speaker of the house, it was not her duty to evaluate the security response to the incident. The Capitol Police Board holds the responsibility for this and has the authority to seek assistance from the National Guard.
At a campaign event on Saturday, Ms. Haley addressed comments made about her. She stated, “During last night’s rally, Trump repeatedly mentioned me and questioned why I did not increase security during the Capitol riots or handle January 6 more effectively.”
“I was not present in DC on January 6,” stated the candidate. “They are claiming he was mistaken, that he was referring to a different topic. He was discussing Nancy Pelosi.”
She also stated, “He brought up my name numerous times in that situation.” The candidate for president proceeded with her address, highlighting her worries about Mr. Trump’s capability to handle the responsibilities that come with the position he is pursuing.
I am not making any offensive remarks, but in the face of the demands of a presidency, we cannot have someone whose mental capacity to fulfill this role is in doubt. We simply cannot.
This is not the first instance where Mr. Trump has mistaken his political adversaries. On Friday, he mixed up President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama. Mr. Trump has often brought up Mr. Biden’s age, as he is currently 81 years old.
On Friday, Mr. Trump remarked that he is unable to string two sentences together and relies on a teleprompter.
