Four individuals perished in Australia due to drowning at an unmonitored shoreline, marking one of the most catastrophic incidents of its kind in nearly twenty years.
On Wednesday, emergency services were called to Victoria’s Philip beach due to a report of four individuals in distress in the Newhaven water.
The Australian Associated Press reported that Kane Treloar, the state agency commander for Life Saving Victoria, stated that the organization was contacted to help four individuals in distress near Forrest Caves on Phillip Island. This occurred a short distance from our designated lifeguard area.
When our lifeguards arrived, they discovered that off-duty lifeguards had already rescued three individuals from the water. The remaining person was then rescued by one of our rescue boats.
According to Life Saving Victoria, this is the most severe tragedy that has occurred in Victorian waters in nearly 20 years.
According to Mr. Treloar, all three individuals, a 20-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and a 43-year-old woman, were unresponsive and unconscious. Despite receiving CPR, they unfortunately passed away.
A 20-year-old woman, who was one of four individuals of Indian descent, passed away at Alfred Hospital after being transported there in a critical state.
“The waters in this area are notorious for strong currents and dangerous circumstances, and unfortunately the individual became caught in a rip,” stated Karen Nyholm, assistant commissioner for Victoria Police’s Eastern Region.
The situation and the amount of fatalities are extremely tragic. This is a tragedy for those who were present, and I’m sure it will be a memory that they will unfortunately have to carry with them for the rest of their lives,” she stated, according to 9News.com.au.
The Victorian premier, Jacinta Allen, also released a statement regarding the tragedy. She expressed her condolences to those who have been impacted by this terrible event.
“To be out enjoying a day with family and friends in a beautiful part of our state to end in this tragedy must be devastating for those involved.
This is a sad and unfortunate reminder of the risks associated with swimming.
Expressing sympathy for the fatalities, the Indian diplomatic mission in Canberra stated that the consulate general in Melbourne had been communicating with the acquaintances of the deceased.
The embassy stated that a tragic incident occurred in Australia where 4 Indians lost their lives due to drowning at Phillip Island, Victoria. They offer their heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims. The Consulate General of India in Melbourne is providing necessary support to the friends of the deceased.
