A former secretary-general of Nato has cautioned that the world needs to focus on Ukraine as the Russian invasion persists.
According to Lord George Robertson, if foreign governments stop supplying weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin may become more confident in expanding the attacks beyond Ukraine.
This occurs during a temporary break in the Israel-Hamas conflict, as coverage of the Middle East remains a prominent topic in the news.
Former NATO leader Lord Robertson, who held the position from 1999 to 2003, expressed approval for the temporary ceasefire in Gaza. However, he told the PA news agency that the constant media coverage of Gaza may be causing people to overlook the situation in Ukraine, which needs to be addressed.
“We must continue to draw attention to Ukraine’s conflict with Russia, as it has significant implications for all of us.”
“Vladimir Putin is not simply interested in subjugating Ukraine. He has got a much bigger agenda in the future, and if he succeeds in Ukraine, who knows where he is going to stop.”
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has now been going on for more than 640 days since the invasion began in February 2022. Lord Robertson has urged Nato member states to persist in their efforts to address Russia’s actions, citing Mr Putin’s “abject failure”.
He stated, “We must not let the Ukraine conflict fade from our attention. This only benefits Vladimir Putin and no one else.”
“The fact is that most of his objectives have actually turned to dust. He wanted to stop Nato enlargement, and it is now bigger. He wanted to divide Europe and divide Europe from America, he failed in that respect.
He had ambitions to control all of Ukraine, but now he is trapped in the Donbas region. The one person who authorized the invasion has ultimately failed miserably.
“We must alter the mindset of that individual by remaining fully united and ensuring that Ukrainians receive the necessary weapons and ammunition in a timely manner.”
We must change Vladimir Putin’s mindset in order to make a difference. The consequences are extremely significant because if Putin achieves his goal, he will not limit himself to just Ukraine.
The Labour peer advocated for a lasting resolution to address the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
He expressed his belief that the countries in the area will eventually need to collaborate in order to reach a lasting resolution, allowing both Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully.
The current dispute will continue for an extended period of time unless a lasting resolution is reached.
