Election 2024 live: Harris says ‘we are the underdogs’ at first campaign fundraiser
Kamala Harris speaks to Barack and Michelle Obama as they endorse her candidacy for the White House

Kamala Harris acknowledged that she and the Democrats are “underdogs in this race,” at her first fundraiser since becoming the Democrat’s presumptive nominee.

The vice president was greeted with a standing ovation at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, where she was introduced by musician James Taylor, before repeating her line that she “knows Donald Trump’s type” from her career prosecuting “predators… fraudsters… and cheaters.”

“We are the underdogs in this race. Level set, ok. We are the underdogs in this race, but this is a people powered campign,” she said.

She later laid into Donald Trump, saying: “You may have noticed, Donald Trump has been resorting to some wild lies about my record. And some of what he and his running mate are saying, well, it’s just plain wierd. I mean that’s the box you put that in.

The Harris campaign estimated that the event would bring in over $1.4 million in donations. With rougly 800 attendees, it was the largest held in the Berkshires since former First Lady Michelle Obama visited in 2012

Meanwhile, a New York Times/Siena College poll has found Harris just one percentage point behind Trump, narrowing the six-point gap between Joe Biden and his predecessor.

Kamala Harris tells young voters ‘we are counting on you’

In a virtual address to Voters of Tomorrow Summit, Kamala Harris told young voters that it was clear that “your generation is leaving on the most important issues of our time.”

In a pre-recorded message the vice president reiterated that it was young voters that helped elect her and Joe Biden in 2020, saying “this November, we will win again.”

Last year, I convened more than 15,000 Young Leaders on my nationwide fight for our freedoms college tour, to hear about the issues that matter most to your generation,” she said.

“And at every stop, it was so clear to me, your generation is leaving on the most important issues of our time.

“In this moment, we then each face a question. What kind of country do we want to live in? A country of freedom, compassion, and the rule of law? Or a country of chaos, fear and hate?

“Here’s the thing. We each have the power to answer this question. And in this election, we are counting on you to energize, to organize and mobilize and to fight for our most fundamental freedoms. And we know, when we fight, we win.”
