A woman who escaped gang violence in Haiti went into labor on a plane, resulting in the unexpected birth of a baby boy. The airline provided a surprise gift to the family after the dramatic in-flight experience.
Wilene Tulus, 42, was travelling on 15 March with her husband from Mexico City to Ciudad Juárez, a city on Mexico’s border with the US, when she went into labour shortly after take-off.
According to the Daily Mail, the couple was en route to a meeting with immigration officials in the US to discuss their request for asylum.
In under 30 minutes of the flight, Ms. Tulus, who was expecting her second child, informed the cabin crew that she was experiencing contractions. A doctor on the flight assisted in the safe birth of her son.
A fellow traveler filmed a flight attendant walking down the aisle of the aircraft with a newborn and then handing the baby over to its parents.
The infant received medical attention from paramedics upon arrival at Abraham González Airport in Ciudad Juarez. Due to the uncontrolled and unsanitary conditions during the birth, the baby was transferred to a specialized children’s hospital. The mother was also transported elsewhere, but was reunited with her baby over the weekend.
The health department of the region, known as the Secretaría de Salud Chihuahua, stated that following the first 24 hours of admission, the mother was released and chose to take her baby to the Children’s Specialty Hospital on her own. She was able to hold her baby in her arms during the transfer.
The couple, who traveled with Aeromexico, received a gift of 90 free flights for their baby to commemorate the airline’s 90 years in operation.
The Independent has reached out to the airline for a response.
The Daily Mail was informed that we are extremely thrilled to have played a role in this exciting story that is just getting started.
Aeromexico expresses gratitude to the doctors for their high level of professionalism. The airline also acknowledges the exceptional efforts of their flight attendants and pilots. It is important to note that the safety of customers and employees remains their top priority.
Ms Tulus’s pregnancy status is uncertain, yet Aeromexico’s guidelines state that passengers who are 33 weeks or more pregnant must present a medical certificate in order to travel.
