According to the military of Poland, on Sunday, Russia carried out a significant airborne assault on western Ukraine, during which it trespassed into Polish airspace using a cruise missile.
The Russian government carried out air strikes in multiple significant Ukrainian cities, such as Lviv close to the Polish border, and the capital city of Kyiv, only a few hours after Vladimir Putin declared retribution for the Isis terrorist attack on a concert hall in Moscow. The president of Russia guaranteed that all individuals involved in the attack will face fair and inescapable consequences.
On Sunday morning, missiles aimed at the Lviv region came near the Polish border and, in one instance, even went into Poland’s airspace for a period of 39 seconds. As a result, the Polish air force had to put their F-16 fighter jets on high readiness.
At 4:23am on 24 March (3:23am GMT), the Polish armed forces reported a breach of Polish airspace by a cruise missile launched by the Russian Federation’s long-range aviation unit overnight on X.
The object came into Polish territory near the village of Oserdow (located in Lublin Voivodeship) and remained there for 39 seconds. The military radar systems tracked the object for the entire duration of its flight.
The Polish armed forces have announced the activation of Polish and allied aircraft, potentially causing a rise in noise levels, particularly in the southeastern region of the country.
The southeastern region of Poland shares a border with Ukraine. The report also mentioned that Poland, as a member of NATO, has taken all required measures to protect its airspace.
Even though Isis took responsibility for the bombing at a concert in Moscow that resulted in the deaths of 133 people, the Russian government has also insinuated potential involvement of Ukrainians. President Putin stated that four suspected assailants were apprehended while attempting to flee to Ukraine.
The idea that Kyiv was involved has been deemed “ridiculous”, and countries in the West have expressed their condolences to the Russian citizens and denounced the act of terrorism. They also emphasized that there is no evidence linking Ukraine to the attack.
All of Ukrainian airspace remained under air raid alert on Sunday during the Russian air raid. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed several explosions in the Ukrainian capital and said air defence systems were engaged in repelling the attack.
According to Serhiy Popko, who leads Kyiv’s military administration, Ukraine’s air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed approximately twelve missiles launched by Russia in and near the capital city. This information was announced on the messaging platform Telegram.
According to the official, preliminary data indicated that there were no fatalities or significant destruction caused by the attacks.
According to Andriy Sadovyi, mayor of Lviv, there have been a total of 20 missiles and seven attack drones launched in the Lviv region, aiming at “vital infrastructure.” However, there have been no direct attacks on the city itself.
In recent days, Ukraine has been repeatedly attacked by Russia, with Moscow claiming it is in response to Ukrainian aggression during their recent presidential election.
“Early on Sunday, US ambassador Bridget Brink informed that this is the third morning this week that Ukraine is facing an air alert, urging all citizens to take shelter.”
“Illegally ignoring international law, Russia continues to recklessly deploy drones and missiles, endangering millions of innocent civilians.”
The defense ministry of Russia has not yet given a response to Poland’s statement about the breach of its airspace or the bombings on Sunday morning in Ukraine.
