Nine individuals were harmed in a presumed acid assault in Clapham, South London.
The police were called to Lessar Avenue SW4 in Lambeth at approximately 7:25pm GMT. Nine people were injured, including a woman, her two children, and three officers.
The authorities are actively searching for the perpetrator involved in the “horrific” event that occurred on Wednesday evening. They have utilized a helicopter to aid in the search efforts.
According to Detective Superintendent Alexander Castle, three bystanders attempted to help a woman and her children, but ended up getting injured themselves. The responding officers also sustained minor injuries, as stated in a news release.
According to a witness who spoke to The Sun, a woman and her children were in the presence of a man when the two individuals exited a vehicle and engaged in a physical altercation on the street.
According to a witness, the alleged perpetrator forcibly pulled a child from a car and aggressively threw them to the ground, as reported by Sky News. Following this, a woman involved in an argument with the suspect could be heard screaming, “My eyes! My eyes! Someone call the police!”
According to The Sun, the man purportedly went back to the vehicle and tried to hit the woman with it.
According to the witness, there was a small infant girl banging on the door of the father’s side while the woman was crying, screaming, and asking for assistance.
He unlocked the door, removed the infant, and forcefully struck her against the ground two times.
A second eyewitness recounted to the BBC how the mother exclaimed “I cannot see, I cannot see” while he attempted to assist her. He described the scene as extremely shocking.
A nearby couple stated that they rushed to the street to assist a woman who was crying out for help.
A witness informed the British broadcaster that they witnessed a man removing a girl from a car and forcefully throwing her to the ground twice.
“I pursued him for half the distance of the road, but due to wearing slippers, I was unable to make much progress.”
When I returned, I witnessed the aftermath of the woman’s attack with an unknown substance. In response, I quickly went inside to retrieve some water and sprayed her to provide relief.
All of the wounded individuals received medical care at the location, with five being transferred to a prominent trauma facility. Three were brought to a nearby hospital for treatment and one additional person was released on site.
Earlier, firefighters arrived at the location and utilized specialized tools to identify the substance that was used. The London Ambulance Service also dispatched members of their hazardous area response team to the site.
According to a spokesperson on Wednesday, we received a call at 7:29pm regarding an event on Clapham Common South Side, SW4.
“We dispatched several resources to the location, such as two officers trained in incident response, three teams of paramedics, and members of our specialized hazardous area response team.”
“We attended to a total of nine individuals, with five of them being transported to a major trauma center. Three patients were taken to a nearby hospital, and the remaining one was released at the location.”
Mr. Castle reported that a woman and her two young children were transported to the hospital for medical care as victims.
Three additional individuals – all of whom are over the age of 18 – have been transported to a hospital due to injuries they sustained while assisting.
As soon as we have more information about their conditions, we will provide an update.
Mr. Castle stated that, at this point, the Met Police suspects the substance to be corrosive while tests are still being conducted to confirm its identity.
Marina Ahmad, a London assembly member, said the suspected acid attack stemmed from a traffic collision, adding that a man was “assaulting occupants in a car and throwing acid,” she wrote on X.
According to Mr. Castle, law enforcement is utilizing all available resources to apprehend the perpetrator in the event.
A male was spotted running away from the location. We are utilizing resources from various departments within the Metropolitan Police to capture this person and investigations are still ongoing to understand the cause of this terrible event,” he stated.
