According to the Met Office, there will be snowfall in various areas of the UK on Sunday due to the arrival of a burst of freezing air from the Arctic.
There are currently ice and snow advisories in effect for northern Scotland. Motorists should be prepared for potential travel difficulties.
According to forecasters, certain areas may see up to 5 centimetres of snow by the end of the day.
A distinct alert has been issued for ice in Northern Ireland on Monday, as strong winds from the north will push showers further inland.
The Met Office predicts that the UK will continue to experience cold temperatures throughout the week, which will raise the likelihood of snow.
According to the weather agency, there is a chance for snow to spread into Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, and northern England on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, there is a possibility of snow reaching southern regions of the UK.
“We are monitoring a few weather systems on Tuesday and Wednesday that could potentially bring disruptive snow to certain areas,” stated Chris Bulmer, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office.
Next week, snowfall will primarily occur inland as any weather systems pass through the country.
“Current models are presenting us with various options for both systems. We will be able to provide more information in the upcoming days.”
On Wednesday, the temperature in Aviemore, near Inverness, dropped to -10.4C. This week, it is predicted that temperatures will remain below 0C in many areas of the country.
Glasgow is predicted to have a maximum temperature of 3C, while Manchester is expected to reach 4C and London 7C. The Cardiff region in South Wales is projected to be the warmest area with highs of 8C.
Overnight on Monday, temperatures are expected to drop to -1C or -2C in urban areas.
According to forecasters, Thursday and Friday are expected to have “extremely low” temperatures and the possibility of strong frost overnight.
Snow showers will be brought inland intermittently by winds coming from the north, with the highest frequency in northern Scotland.
Inland regions can expect mostly dry conditions with plenty of clear skies and sunshine.
As the week comes to a close, it is expected that there will be a shift towards milder weather conditions as weather patterns from the Atlantic move in from the west.
According to forecasters, there will be a resurgence of unstable weather patterns with periods of precipitation and powerful gusts throughout all regions periodically.
As the conditions become less severe, the transition may also bring additional periods of snow.
