The president of Iran has promised to seek retaliation after accusing Israel of carrying out an airstrike that resulted in the death of an Iranian intelligence leader on Saturday morning. Tensions in the region are escalating due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The Syrian military reported that a structure in the heavily fortified Mazzeh neighborhood of western Damascus, which was utilized by the Iranian paramilitary organization Revolutionary Guard, was completely demolished. This resulted in the deaths of three high-ranking commanders and two additional individuals.
According to Nour News, which is believed to have close ties to the country’s intelligence network, one of the casualties was Gen. Sadegh Omidzadeh, the intelligence deputy of the Quds Force’s expeditionary unit in Syria.
According to reports, an unknown number of Syrian soldiers had also lost their lives.
After the assault, for which Israel has not issued a statement, individuals supported by Iran in Iraq fired projectiles at American military personnel stationed there, according to the US Central Command. One American soldier sustained minor injuries.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October, the US military has been targeted 58 times in Iraq and 83 times in Syria.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi denounced the airstrike in Syria, declaring that the Islamic Republic will not let the actions of the Zionist regime go without a response.
According to a Syrian war monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a missile attack killed six individuals – five Iranians and one Syrian. The attack occurred during a meeting of officials from Iran-supported factions.
Nasser Kanaani, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, issued a statement in response to the Israeli attack, affirming that the sacrifice of these esteemed martyrs will not go unrecognized.
He stated that Tehran maintains the right to retaliate against the orchestrated terrorism of the fabricated Zionist government at the suitable time and location.
Iran once again attempted to connect Israel with the terrorist organization known as the Islamic State, a narrative that its leaders have been pushing since a suicide bombing by the extremist group claimed over 90 lives in Iran in early January.
Syrian state television announced that an “Israeli attack” struck a residential structure in Mazzeh, where multiple diplomatic missions are located. The strike on Saturday occurred in close proximity to the embassies of Venezuela and South Africa.
Authorities stationed security personnel around the demolished four-story structure while emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire trucks, were observed in the vicinity. Efforts were made to locate any individuals who may have been trapped beneath the debris.
A nearby store owner reported hearing five consecutive blasts around 9:15am (6:15am GMT) during the strike. He also mentioned seeing the removal of a man and woman’s bodies and three wounded individuals later on.
The attack occurred during escalating tensions in the area, as Israel continues its offensive in Gaza.
The conflict has increased tensions throughout the area, putting other disputes at risk of erupting.
In the previous month, a suburb of Damascus was targeted by an Israeli air strike, resulting in the death of Iranian general Seyed Razi Mousavi. Mousavi was an advisor for the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Syria. Israel has also carried out attacks on Palestinian and Lebanese operatives in Syria over the course of several years.
For a while, both Iranian and Syrian authorities have confirmed that Iran has advisors and military experts in Syria. However, they have denied having any troops on the ground. Numerous fighters from groups supported by Iran played a role in the conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011 and ultimately aided in tipping the scales in favor of President Bashar Assad.
Israel rarely admits to carrying out attacks in Syria, but it has stated that its targets are the bases of militant groups allied with Iran. These groups include Hezbollah from Lebanon, which has deployed thousands of fighters to assist Syrian President Bashar Assad’s military.
In the beginning of this month, Israel allegedly carried out a strike in Beirut that resulted in the death of Saleh Arouri, a high-ranking commander in Hamas.
In recent weeks, there have been instances of rockets being launched from Syria towards northern Israel and the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. This has contributed to increased tensions along the border between Lebanon and Israel, as well as attacks on vessels in the Red Sea carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels who are supported by Iran.
