Time Out has handpicked the top 15 destinations to travel to in the UK for the year 2024, and a few of them may be unexpected choices.
The article centered on exploring local locations in order to discover the ones that will have new releases and openings next year, while also utilizing “specialized understanding of cultural hubs throughout the nation”.
The resulting compilation includes some of the liveliest and bustling cities in the country, picturesque islands off the coast of Cornwall, culturally rich coastal towns, and peaceful fishing villages.
Bristol, a city in the southwest, claimed the top spot due to its vibrant cultural offerings comparable to London’s. It is also known for its charming streets and lively, diverse nightlife.
In 2024, it received recognition as the top performer due to its expanded arts program. This included a musical version of the 2006 movie Starter for Ten at the Old Vic theater, DIASPORA!, a festival celebrating BIPOC artists from around the world, and a new interactive gallery called Undershed.
Coming in second place is Hull, chosen for its growing LGBTQ+-inclusive environment, featuring places like Monroe’s, Unit 49, and Cherry’s (named after Ru Paul’s Drag Race contestant Cherry Valentine).
Ranked third for its otherworldly scenery, the Isles of Scilly have been selected due to their pristine beaches, crystal blue waters, and abundance of activities such as island hopping and dolphin watching. Located off the coast of Cornwall, this archipelago offers unspoiled natural beauty.
Not surprisingly, London ranks at number four on the list. The city has numerous new hotel openings and restaurant launches planned for 2024, as well as a warehouse club located in a former IKEA called Drumsheds. There are also exciting exhibitions to look forward to, such as Yoko Ono at the Tate Modern and The World of Tim Burton at the Design Museum.
The top five includes Belfast, which Time Out describes as “unfairly overlooked.” The city in Northern Ireland is currently implementing “Belfast 2024,” a program showcasing 24 major projects and more than 200 events, workshops, and activities.
