A team of scientists in Japan discovered that consuming wasabi can provide unexpected advantages for cognitive functioning.
Research conducted at Tohoku University discovered that consuming spicy sushi toppings can enhance memory function in both the short and long term.
The lead researcher, Rui Nouchi, stated that previous studies on animals had shown the positive effects of wasabi on health. However, the significant improvement observed in humans was unexpected and impressive.
In the double-blind study, 72 individuals between the ages of 60 and 80 were divided into two groups. One group received wasabi extract while the other group received a placebo.
The group that received treatment experienced an 18% increase in their episodic memory scores within a period of three months.
