Donald Trump and his team reportedly made multiple attempts to communicate with a former Mar-a-Lago staff member who had knowledge of important discussions and events related to the federal case involving classified documents against the former president.
Based on information from several individuals and documents obtained by CNN, it has been reported that Mr. Trump made an unusual move by contacting an employee who had recently resigned from his position at the Florida property to ask about their departure.
According to reports, associates of Mr. Trump later purportedly provided the ex-employee with complimentary tickets to a golf tournament.
The ex-employee, who eventually informed the federal special counsel’s office about the communications involved in the documents case, purportedly received an offer from Mr. Trump’s lawyer for help in finding legal representation. The lawyer mentioned in a voicemail that he was aware the ex-employee had been served with a subpoena to testify before a grand jury.
The Independent has reached out to the Justice Department and a lawyer representing the ex-president in regards to the documents case for a statement.
The recorded message, left by John Rowley, former lawyer of Mr. Trump who has since resigned, was previously disclosed by The New York Times.
According to a recorded voicemail obtained by the paper, the attorney stated that they believed a grand jury subpoena had been received and requested a call at the recipient’s earliest convenience.
In September, Mr. Rowley stated to the newspaper that he had no intention of influencing anyone’s testimony and was genuinely offering to assist in finding a lawyer for the employee.
The person, whose identity has not been disclosed in the media, is believed to have been present or had knowledge of significant events being investigated in the case involving classified documents.
The staff member relocated multiple containers for Mr. Trump and was knowledgeable about discussions between the ex-president and staff members regarding the records.
In June, Mr. Trump was charged with 37 felony offenses pertaining to his management of classified materials at Mar-a-Lago. These charges include 31 counts of intentionally keeping classified documents and one count of conspiring to impede justice.
After a month, he received a revised indictment that added new charges, one of which accused him of illegally keeping potential plans for a military attack on Iran.
President Trump and his two associates, Waltine “Walt” Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, have been accused of trying to erase surveillance footage that could be given to federal investigators.
The ex-president has refuted any misconduct and entered a plea of not guilty, as have his assistants.
