Airplane meals are not known for their quality, and even the most resilient travelers may hesitate to order a menu item that has been translated incorrectly on a recent flight.
A passenger on a China Eastern Airlines flight captured a photo of the business class menu, featuring options such as beef, seafood, and soup dishes.
However, a particular English translation has sparked conversation. One of the options for an appetizer is “imported dog food with okra.”
Conrad Wu posted the picture on Facebook and inquired, “What is this exactly?”
Nearly 1,000 individuals have responded to the Facebook post, resulting in hundreds of comments and shares.
Edward Poon inquired about the airline’s pet-friendly policies, while someone else suggested that the treatment on the airline is comparable to that of a dog rather than a human.
Coleman So cautioned about the repercussions of using Google Translate, while Dai Ching made a joke about it possibly translating to “hot dog.”
The picture was also posted on Reddit, where a user noticed that it was specifically “imported” dog food. They joked, “It seems like economy class passengers only receive dog food from their own country.”
The dish mentioned on the translated menu on the China Eastern flight is uncertain. The Independent has reached out to the operator for clarification.
In the beginning of the year, an airline recommended that its customers choose not to receive an inflight meal, stating it as the “moral decision”.
Japan Airlines previously tested a program called the “JAL Ethical Choice MealSkip Option” in 2020. This allowed passengers to decline a meal service on select flights. The airline has now decided to make this option available for all flight bookings globally, highlighting the positive impact on sustainability by skipping a mid-flight lunch.
In a potentially unpleasant situation during a flight, a first-class traveler en route to Japan in February who requested a vegan breakfast was surprised to receive only a banana and chopsticks.
According to their online post, I initially believed the banana served after take-off was a disappointing appetizer. However, it turned out to be the entire meal service.
