According to officials, a person was killed in Hawaii after being attacked by a shark while surfing.
The victim in the incident on Saturday has been identified as Jason Carter, 39, by the Maui Police Department.
Around 11:20am, authorities arrived at Paia Bay in Maui in response to a “shark encounter.” Mr. Carter was brought to shore by ocean safety officers due to injuries sustained during the incident.
The law enforcement agency stated that the male was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment after first responders performed life-saving measures on shore until medic personnel arrived.
Unfortunately, Carter passed away after arriving at the hospital.
During an interview with NBC, a witness to the tragedy described the terrifying attack and likened the shark’s size to that of a pickup truck.
“The witness informed the network that the shark suddenly began attacking and dragging him downward. According to the witness, the shark’s dorsal fin was almost equal in size to Carter’s body and its height matched that of his head while sitting on the board. The witness found it difficult to hear Carter’s screams.”
Baldwin Beach Park and Lower Pā’ia Park were closed following the shark incident as responders patrolled the area on shore and on jet skies.
An inquiry is being conducted into the death of Carter, but officials have stated that there is no suspicion of foul play.
According to NBC, there were a total of eight shark incidents reported in Hawaii in 2023. However, the attack on Saturday resulted in the first death.
