A significant event has been announced as numerous individuals are currently without water due to ongoing issues at a Thames Water treatment facility.
The water company reports that engineers are currently addressing the disruption of water supply for residents in Surrey due to problems caused by Storm Ciaran at the Shalford water treatment plant.
The company has expressed regret to customers who experienced a water outage on Saturday afternoon.
Amidst the shortage, the company is offering bottled water at various designated spots. Images posted on social media depict large lines at the locations, such as Godalming Crown Court car park and Artington Park & Ride.
Local grocery stores have reported that individuals were frantically purchasing bottled water. The BBC stated that Waitrose in Godalming confirmed they were sold out of bottled water.
The CEO of Thames Water informed Chancellor and local MP Jeremy Hunt that approximately 13,500 customers were currently without water supply. In addition, another 6,500 customers were expected to experience a loss of supply in the near future. This update was shared on X at 3:18pm.
He stated that the controls at Shalford Water Treatment Works have been reset and they are currently conducting tests on turbidity at reduced water production levels. If these tests are successful, production can be increased in order to restore the water supply.
“Thames Water is transporting water by tankers in order to provide necessary support for hospitals and maintain the availability of bottled water stations.”
In regards to X, Thames Water has issued an apology for the ongoing issues and has assured that their engineers are actively working to resolve the problem and restore water supplies to the affected area. In the interim, bottled water stations will remain operational and tankers are being utilized to pump water into the pipe system.
The severe weather event known as Storm Ciaran has resulted in problems at Shalford Water Treatment Works, causing disruptions to the water supply in the area. Bottled water is available for pickup at Crown Court Car Park and The Burys in Godalming, as well as at Artington Park & Ride on Old Portsmouth Road in Guildford.
Surrey County Council has confirmed a major incident had been declared in the area. Leader Tim Oliver said: “Surrey County Council is continuing to work with partners across the Local Resilience Forum (LRF), following notification from Thames Water of a water shortage in the Guildford/Waverley areas.
The LRF has deemed this a significant event. All collaborating parties will maintain a close relationship with the lead agency, Thames Water, to keep residents in these regions informed and supported, especially those who are most susceptible.
