A hotel staff member suggests that guests place a bottle under their bed upon entering their room to assist in detecting any potential hiding individuals.
Esther Sturrus, an employee of KLM, a Dutch airline, frequently posts travel-related videos on her TikTok account. She shared this tip as a part of her video on traveling alone.
Trespassers and intruders may target tourists, particularly if they are staying on the ground floor or in rooms with easy exterior access.
According to her video, if you ensure that the bottle exits from the opposite side, you can easily verify if there is anyone under the bed without physically checking.
The instructional video also offers suggestions for organizing toiletries, using steam from the shower to freshen up clothing, and removing steam from the bathroom mirror.
A new video showcasing her initial actions upon arriving in her hotel room was posted in October 2022 and has garnered nearly 39 million views. Suggestions in the video include securing the door, shutting the curtains, and adjusting the air conditioning.
Some TikTok users have expressed their appreciation for the advice. One user commented, “I never thought about the possibility of someone being under the bed.”
One user described the tips as “extremely helpful”, while another praised flight attendants as the true MVPs.
In April, Ms. Sturrus gained media attention for her top 10 travel recommendations, including the suggestion to keep a shoe in the safe.
She mentioned that by doing this, you will always remember everything in your safe and realize if you’re missing a shoe before leaving.
Some other tips and tricks have not been as positively received. In March, a TikTok user named NDA shared a “hack” he used where he purchased three fully refundable tickets in one row and then returned them shortly before takeoff, resulting in getting a whole row to himself. This idea was met with mixed reactions, with some pointing out potential issues with overbooked flights and others questioning its ethical implications.
