On Tuesday, a fire in a house in Somers, Connecticut resulted in the deaths of four children.
According to a statement from Somers Fire Marshal John Roache to The Independent, a fire started on January 2nd in a two-family home where four children under the age of 12 were present. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by officials.
On Tuesday evening, when emergency personnel arrived, they reported that the front of the house was completely covered in fire. At a press conference on Wednesday, authorities stated that firefighters were able to rescue two children from a second-floor window. Unfortunately, one child was pronounced dead at the scene and the other passed away at a nearby hospital, according to Mr. Roache. Shortly after, two more children were discovered deceased inside the house.
According to Mr. Roache, there were a total of seven individuals in the home at the time of the fire – one adult and six children. Fortunately, the adult and two children were able to survive. Additionally, USA Today reports that four individuals on the other side of the duplex also made it out alive.
According to Mr. Roache, it took over two hours to put out the fire. He believes that the fire spread quickly due to the house’s age and numerous hidden areas.
Tim Keeney, the First Selectman of Somers, informed NBC Connecticut that the family faced difficulty in exiting due to obstructions blocking the doors.
“The town suffered a great loss,” stated Mr. Keeney to the media.
According to Mr. Roache, individuals who wish to assist the family can make financial contributions by mailing them to The Angel Fund at 619 Main St. in Somers, Connecticut.
