A Delta flight was compelled to reverse course one hour into the flight when maggots dropped from the overhead bin onto economy class passengers.
On Tuesday, February 13, a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan had to turn around due to a passenger’s suitcase containing spoiled fish. The suitcase was placed in the overhead bin and opened, causing maggots to fall onto passengers.
Upon landing, all passengers were directed to exit the aircraft and the bag containing the fish was placed in a bag for disposal. The plane was also thoroughly sanitized.
A passenger named Kelce shared their experience on Twitter, commenting about their flight with Delta Airlines. They wrote, “It’s quite unpleasant to be 2 hours into an 8-hour flight to Amsterdam with @Delta and discover that there is spoiled fish and maggots on board with us.”
During an interview with the Daily Mail, Kelce shared that the Delta employees were able to locate the person responsible for the decaying suitcase and kept them on the plane after everyone else had exited.
According to Kelce, travelers who experienced an overnight delay were provided with 8,000 air miles, reimbursement for their hotel room, and a meal ticket worth $30 as compensation.
Other passengers on the flight took to Reddit writing about their own situation being on the flight in the r/Delta subreddit.
“I had an unpleasant flight,” a comment stated. “My family and I were seated in the row right in front of some maggots. The lady behind us informed the flight attendants that the maggots were falling on her head. It was gross. When I turned around, I could see them squirming on the seat. Thankfully, we were moved to a different seat further ahead.”
“I retrieved our carry-on bag at the end of the flight, which was unfortunately near a repulsive one. The passenger responsible for the unpleasant bag was still on the plane, and I thoroughly checked our bag before retrieving it. It is uncertain what consequences they may face. Additionally, the bag was reportedly wrapped in newspaper, which is extremely unsanitary.”
The conclusion of the Reddit post was that five of their suitcases did not reach their intended destination due to the incident.
According to The Independent, Delta has issued an apology for the maggot incident that occurred on Flight 133 from AMS to DTW. The airline stated that the interruption was caused by a carry-on bag that was not properly packed. Passengers were placed on the next available flight after the aircraft returned to the gate. The plane was taken out of service for cleaning.
Delta has previously attracted attention for almost removing a woman from a flight last week due to her not wearing a bra.
Lisa Archbold shared her distressing encounter with a flight attendant before boarding her flight from Salt Lake City to San Francisco in an interview with Yahoo News Australia. On January 22, the DJ, who is self-employed, was departing from Utah’s Sundance Film Festival and returning home to the Bay Area. Just before the flight was set to depart and all passengers were seated, Archbold was loudly summoned to the front of the plane.
The female crew member escorted Archbold off the plane to scold her for her clothing. She informed her that her outfit was considered “inappropriate” and too revealing.
