While a lot of people focus on attaining a young appearance and using creams to prevent signs of aging on their face, taking care of our hands often gets overlooked, which is not beneficial.
This is particularly important to consider when exposing our hands to the elements and everyday stressors that can affect our skin.
According to Leanna Zaman, a beauty specialist for Boots, many of us make taking care of our skin a high priority, but we often neglect our hand care.
“Our hands are constantly exposed to environmental factors such as sun damage and pollution which can lead to visible signs of ageing.”
Hand cream & lotions
To address this issue, Zaman suggests incorporating a hand cream into your daily skincare routine. Look for components like retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, and niacinamide to aid in minimizing signs of aging like dryness, dark spots, and wrinkles.
She claims that using more advanced formulas containing pure retinol can improve cell regeneration and decrease the appearance of fine lines and uneven texture, while also decreasing the production of melanin and preventing excessive pigmentation.
Zaman suggests generously using hand cream before going to bed for a deep overnight treatment. For daytime, they recommend choosing a hand cream with SPF protection.
Zaman recommends choosing creams that have an SPF of 30 and protect against UVA rays, as well as containing hyaluronic acid and aloe vera. These hydrating ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, can help minimize the appearance of fine lines caused by dry hands.
Exfoliate
According to Georgina Henry, the UK education manager for Perricone MD, people often neglect the care of their hands during their pursuit of healthy aging. It is a common mistake that is often overlooked.
Frequent exposure to harsh weather and sunlight can cause the hands to exhibit signs of aging prematurely.
According to Henry, a great method for keeping hands looking youthful is to have a consistent mini routine. This routine involves exfoliating with either a facial or body exfoliant, ideally two to three times a week.
To ensure healthy skin, make sure to moisturize daily and touch up as needed. When going outside, remember to add SPF protection.
Nourish cuticles
Henry recommends taking care of your hands by treating your nails and cuticles with moisturizing oils and getting regular manicures to maintain a youthful and glowy look.
Try using a soap alternative instead.
Frequent hand washing can cause dryness of the hands, especially if they are constantly being used…
According to Ali Headley, the medical and professional affairs manager at Epaderm, when the air is dry, it can cause moisture to be drawn out of the skin. Therefore, it is important to keep our skin hydrated at all times.
According to her, a multipurpose product that serves as both a moisturizer and cleanser can be used as a replacement for traditional soap. She suggests using emollients instead of detergents or soaps when washing your hands to avoid excessive water loss from the skin.
Headley suggests that utilizing cream as a skin cleanser can effectively clean dry skin without causing it to lose extra moisture.
Maintain your nails
“According to Sherrille Riley, a senior beauty therapist and founder of Beauty Edit Mayfair, it is important to receive consistent professional treatments in order to maintain healthy and well-groomed nails and hands. She advises opting for neutral or natural-looking nail polishes, as they tend to be more complimentary for hands that have been exposed to rough conditions.”
Additionally, the current trend for spring includes pastel shades and barely-there polishes, making your nails stylish and up-to-date.
