The 2024 Met Gala’s theme has been unveiled.
Vogue revealed on November 8th that the chosen theme for the yearly fashion charity event will be “Sleeping Beauties: Reviving Fashion”.
The Met Gala takes place every year in New York City on the first Monday of May and is a glamorous fashion event that raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Vogue reports that the showcase will feature 50 valuable garments, including some that are too delicate to be worn again, known as the “Sleeping Beauties”.
Around 250 pieces will be selected from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, showcasing creations by Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Givenchy, covering 400 years of fashion evolution.
Max Hollein, the director and CEO of the Met’s Marina Kellen French, stated that this groundbreaking production will challenge our imagination and allow us to explore various aspects of the work, discover its origins, and ultimately develop a greater admiration for its magnificence.
One of the most delicate items in the collection is a bodice from the Elizabethan era and a ball gown made of silk satin from 1877, designed by American couturier Charles Frederick Worth. These pieces were the initial inspiration for the exhibit’s theme. While they are no longer able to be worn as intended, the bodice and ball gown will be featured in the exhibit through the use of display technology.
The “Sleeping Beauties” collection will utilize Pepper’s ghost, an illusion technique that involves positioning a glass at an angle to reflect an off-stage object and create the illusion of a ghostly figure on-stage. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will also incorporate video animation, light projection, sound manipulation, artificial intelligence, and CGI to enhance the understanding of each piece.
Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, stated that fashion is a highly emotive art form due to its association with the human body. He further explained that fashion holds memories and evokes emotions, and we connect with it through our senses. Bolton hopes that this exhibition will stimulate a heightened sensory appreciation for fashion.
The showcase will consist of three primary areas: land, sea, and sky. Each area will represent the organic elements utilized to produce clothing. Bolton stated, “It is a tribute to nature and the expressive beauty of fashion.” By highlighting the influence of the natural world on fashion over the years, the exhibit will continue to prioritize sustainability.
Last year’s Met Gala theme paid tribute to the esteemed fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, who had passed away. Titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” the event showcased 150 pieces from his tenure as creative director at Fendi, Chloe, and Chanel. Despite its intention to celebrate Lagerfeld’s legacy, the theme faced backlash due to his past remarks that were deemed offensive towards women, the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals who are overweight.
The Met Gala is a yearly event that raises funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It can cost up to $50,000 per person to attend. The dress code and co-chairs for the 2024 Met Gala have not yet been revealed, but it is confirmed that Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, will once again be a co-chair and have ultimate authority over the list of celebrity guests.
