The stylist of Quinta Brunson at the 75th Emmy Awards has come to the defense of the dress she wore.
On January 15th, Brunson graced the red carpet wearing a sleeveless Dior dress in a deep pink shade reminiscent of the 1950s. The dress featured a bow on the front and was paired with brown heels, silver earrings, and rings. Some noticed the dress had creases, which sparked conversation on X (formerly Twitter) and prompted the stylist to address the issue.
The creator and actress of Abbott Elementary became the subject of memes when a user shared a video of her wearing the dress while an iron was being run over it. The caption read, “Hold still, girl.”
A comment was made on the dress featured on the celebrity fashion account Check the Tag on Instagram, stating, “I appreciate the color, but I’m not sure if it flatters her. And those wrinkles! How did she get away with wearing it?”
One person commented: “I appreciate the design, but I dislike the wrinkles. I understand that it’s intentional, but it seems like it wasn’t steamed properly. It should have been fully wrinkled, if that makes sense.”
“I apologize, but this is a significant mistake. I admire her and her stylist, but wrinkled fabric on the red carpet will always be seen as a mess,” stated a third individual in the comments section.
The fashion expert, Jessica Paster, joined the conversation and provided an explanation for choosing the dress for the actress. In her comment, Paster stated, “I anticipated your reaction… it’s made of crushed satin. The dress flatters her figure and the color looks stunning on her.”
A fan replied to the comment, stating: “I see that it’s satin fabric, but I don’t think it looks good. My apologies. Wearing satin on the red carpet? Crushed satin? Nevertheless, I acknowledge your effort!”
Brunson was ultimately presented with the Emmy for her exceptional portrayal as the lead actress in a comedy, marking a significant moment in history as the first Black female to receive this prestigious award. Overwhelmed with emotion, she expressed her gratitude by thanking everyone and drawing a parallel to the iconic figure, Carol Burnett.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Abbott Elementary. Acting in comedic roles has always been my dream and I am overjoyed to see it become a reality. I cannot express enough how much I adore comedy and how thrilled I am to have this chance.” She expressed.
“I didn’t have anything prepared because I simply didn’t anticipate… Oh my goodness. I adore my mother, father, siblings, and entire family dearly. I am deeply in love with my husband. I am overjoyed. I have a strong affection for my cast members. Oh, I have a deep love for Abbott Elementary. Thank you very much.”
In a May 2023 feature for InStyle, the actor discussed her struggles with finding a suitable stylist who can execute her desired look on the red carpet.
“I am not just 4 feet and 11 inches tall, but I also have breasts and a butt,” Brunson stated. “And that is considered a cardinal sin: to be petite and have any sort of curves.”
Brunson shared that there were instances where she collaborated with other stylists and had to express that certain looks felt too youthful for her. Despite this, she was encouraged to try them out and was able to pull them off successfully.
“I thought to myself, ‘It’s not just about making it work. It’s about what I want to convey when attending certain award shows or events.'”
