Taylor Swift and her immense achievements in the entertainment field cannot be ignored. Her presence has even made an impact in the sports world, thanks to her new romance with NFL player Travis Kelce. Whether she’s enjoying a game from a VIP box or strolling backstage with her significant other, Swift’s game-day fashion always manages to make a statement.
The singer known as “Anti-Hero” has been recognized as a fashion trendsetter, with her stunning appearances on the red carpet and iconic use of red lipstick. As expected, fans have eagerly tried to emulate her style, leading to Little Lies’ green velvet dress selling out after Swift was seen wearing it while dining with friend Blake Lively in New York City.
Swift’s football-inspired fashion choices, worn to show her support for her boyfriend, have gained widespread attention. Since September 2023, she has accompanied Kelce to 12 Kansas City Chiefs games, often sitting in the Kelce family suite with his parents, Donna and Ed. Fans are now speculating that she will attend the 2024 Super Bowl on February 11th, where the Chiefs will face off against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, Nevada. This comes just one day after her concert for the Eras Tour in Tokyo, Japan.
Swift has never been one to opt for simplicity when it comes to her game-day attire. Rather than donning a plain jersey with the team name, she adds a touch of sparkle and sophistication to her look with each windbreaker and black mini skirt. With her every move in the spotlight, could Swift potentially inspire sports enthusiasts to embrace more refined yet relaxed outfits at the stadium?
According to Grace Thomas, a seasoned stylist who has experience working with professional athletes, our personal fashion choices are often influenced by the celebrities we admire. This is evident through websites like Star Style, which provide details on the specific brands and clothing pieces worn by famous individuals, allowing us to emulate their style. The availability of social media has also made it easier for fans to recreate looks, such as the one worn by pop sensation Taylor Swift, who was revealed to have worn a velvet green dress from Little Lies that only cost $75.
According to Thomas, as soon as Taylor wears an outfit, there are people searching to identify every brand she is wearing. This has made it easier for people to recreate looks they admire or buy similar pieces. Celebrities are also opting to wear lesser-known, affordable brands and mix them with high-end products.
Despite not having the same fashion budget as the wealthy “Cruel Summer” singer, there are affordable options to imitate her style. Fans of Swift still admire her iconic red lipstick, which stayed intact when she kissed Kelce on the football field after the Chiefs’ victory in the AFC Championship game. While it’s uncertain if she consistently uses the same shade of lipstick, makeup artist Pat McGrath disclosed that Swift’s preferred color is the Legendary Wear Lipstick in Elson 4 from Pat McGrath Labs, which is priced at $34.
During the AFC championship, Swift chose to wear a comfortable red sweater from Gigi Hadid’s Guest in Residence collection, which was priced at $695. Her fashion choices go beyond the stadium, as seen in January when she wore a viral green dress paired with $2,450 knee-high boots from Jimmy Choo. In an interview with The Independent, Los Angeles-based stylist Shea Daspin noted that even while doing everyday activities like going out to dinner and attending football games, Swift’s style has always been lavish.
“She consistently wears a red lip color that perfectly coordinates with the red on her jersey. However, what’s interesting is that she will pair a ‘Chiefs’ sweatshirt with designer Louis Vuitton shoes or Messika jewelry, which can cost up to $8,000. Upon closer inspection, her outfits are extremely expensive,” Daspin described. “At first glance, she may seem like a typical girl next door, but upon further observation, you realize she is actually the very wealthy girl next door.”
The woman has worn 12 different outfits on game days, all of which incorporate the colors red, gold, and white to represent the Kansas City Chiefs. Her first public appearance in support of her boyfriend at Arrowhead Stadium in September 2023 featured a simple look consisting of a red Chiefs windbreaker, white tank top, and red lipstick. Since then, she has been seen wearing a variety of outfits, including a Chiefs sweater with a black mini skirt, a black and white replica of her boyfriend’s Chiefs jacket, and a vintage black and red Chiefs sweater from the 90s. In December, she donned a puffy red and white Chiefs jacket with her boyfriend’s name and jersey number, 87, on it. This jacket was custom-made by Kristin Juszczyk, wife of San Francisco 49ers player Kyle Juszczyk. The jacket gained viral attention after being worn by the woman, leading to the designer receiving a licensing deal with the NFL.
Molly Rooyakkers, a data analyst from Amsterdam who manages the Instagram page Style Analytics, which offers fashion insights based on data, has noticed that many other wives and girlfriends of NFL players have been sporting stylish outfits at sports stadiums. Brittany Mahomes, wife of Patrick Mahomes, even wore a personalized puffer jacket in December. Alix Earle, an influencer dating Miami Dolphins player Braxton Berrios, often pairs her football-themed jacket with a skirt, tights, or a headband.
The speaker, Rooyakkers, described admiring women wearing merchandise, sporting sleek hairstyles, Cartier bracelets, and expertly applied makeup. They noted that such glamorous looks are not often seen outside of the WAG community, a term referring to the partners of professional athletes.
Prior to Taylor Swift’s presence at NFL events, Victoria Beckham was a regular attendee at her husband David Beckham’s soccer games in the 1990s. According to Daspin, Victoria was one of the early pioneers in sporting events where she confidently embraced her own sense of fashion. Despite facing criticism for being a distraction from the game, as shown in their 2023 Netflix documentary “The Beckhams,” the Spice Girls singer remained a strong supporter of her husband.
The stylist stated that Victoria always maintained a fashionable appearance. She would incorporate a hint of athleticism in her outfits, but she was still known as Posh Spice. She might wear a sporty shirt and small shorts, but she wasn’t popular at the time. She would dress to match the vibe, without going overboard, and always wore her signature large sunglasses.
Thanks to Swift’s popular style, fans may be motivated to try out different outfits for game days. While some football fans may be frustrated with the NFL’s focus on Swift, this is not the case for her devoted fans or those who only watch the games to please their significant others. Thomas explained how women can recreate Swift’s football-inspired looks, allowing them to feel included in the world of sports.
“I anticipate that individuals will be more enthusiastic about dressing up for sports events and potentially creating their own gear, similar to Kristin Juszczyk,” she stated. “There may be an increase in girls who are inspired to make their own jerseys. I can envision an impact of this trend, with more independent businesses emerging to produce and customize jerseys and other athletic apparel to establish their own brands.”
Many companies have started selling clothing featuring Swift and Kelce. One small business, TrendyFamousHub, has a hoodie on sale on Etsy that says “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs,” referencing Swift’s change of lyrics during a concert to reflect her relationship. With the Super Bowl approaching, Daspin predicts that not only will Swift fans purchase this type of merchandise, but they will also buy more football-themed accessories. According to Daspin, these accessories, such as football pendant necklaces and game day earrings, have become increasingly popular since Swift became involved in the sport.
The fusion of sports and fashion goes beyond just Swift. In 2022, social media users were embracing the “blokecore” craze, which combines European football with fashion. TikTok user Brandon Huntley gained popularity with his video of himself wearing a soccer jersey and jeans, captioned with “Hottest trend of 2022: Blokecore.” This style has been around for some time, with fitted basketball and baseball jerseys being a popular 90s hip-hop fashion trend. However, it has recently gained traction among celebrities, with Kim Kardashian being seen wearing a vintage AS Roma soccer club jersey and black shorts in January of last year.
Swift’s interest in sports fashion has been increasing, but she is not attempting to copy the “blokecore” trend. According to Rooyakkers, instead of following a trend, the “All Too Well” singer is putting her own spin on her attire at football games. These outfits include unique and stylish jackets and clothing featuring NFL logos. While Taylor’s style may have some similarities to blokecore, it remains distinct and separate.
As the popularity of new styles and fashion trends continues to grow, it is crucial to acknowledge the original sources. We cannot assume that she would not look amazing in an outfit from a small business if she were to appear on Super Bowl Sunday. By openly sharing her fashion choices, Swift can influence the trendy and fashionable style of female sports enthusiasts and also support emerging designers.
“She has openly shared her inspirations and does not intend to diminish anyone else’s. However, she could potentially showcase Black brands more when making purchases,” Thomas expressed. “I hope she takes the opportunity to increase visibility for these creators as her platform is quite influential.”
One thing a famous person can do is give these individuals a chance to stand out, which I believe is crucial when you have such a large amount of attention.
