Emily Blunt’s award-winning gown was a message in itself, even though she also took home an Oscar.
On Sunday, March 10th, the actress appeared at the Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate her work in the film Oppenheimer. She was accompanied by her husband, John Krasinski, and they both wore complementary cream outfits on the red carpet. Krasinski opted for a traditional cream tuxedo with a matching bow tie, while Blunt shone in a shimmering cream-colored gown.
But, a lot of individuals swiftly resorted to X, previously known as Twitter, where they voiced their perplexity about Blunt’s attire and the sequin design beneath the dress’s waistline.
One individual on X questioned if Emily Blunt was wearing a dress made of men’s underwear. They confirmed that she was indeed wearing it.
Another person expressed their gratitude to Emily Blunt for reintroducing the handball keeper jock strap.
“I am a big fan of Emily Blunt and I really hope she wins, she deserves it. Did anyone else notice the tighty whities in this dress?” A third person on the platform also shared the same sentiment.
Another individual expressed their admiration for Emily Blunt, but mentioned that the dress she was wearing appeared to have a pair of tighty whities on top of it, which they were not fond of.
Fans had issues with more than just the waistline of the dress. Some noticed that the straps seemed to be floating above Blunt’s shoulders.
“I’m so distracted by the shoulders on Emily Blunt’s dress,” one tweet read.
Someone else also chimed in, commenting: “Am I the only one who finds Emily Blunt’s dress intriguing? What’s the reason behind her straps not staying on her shoulders?!”
A third individual humorously suggested to locate someone who will honor your personal boundaries as much as the straps on Emily Blunt’s dress honor hers.
Even though there were some criticisms regarding the dress, stylist Jessica Paster remained firm in her choice to dress the Devil Wears Prada actress in a Schiaparelli gown adorned with beaded champagne-colored fabric and unique shoulder and midsection details. Paster completed the look with multiple platinum necklaces from Tiffany & Co that boasted over 100 carats of diamonds, along with a pair of six-carat diamond earrings.
Out of three potential dresses, the ultimate choice was made after a quick fitting on Sunday morning prior to the Oscars. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Paster stated, “I feel that once you make a decision on what to wear, something just clicks. It all depends on your mindset. One dress was vibrant, one was airy, one was white, and then there was this charming little girl.”
The dress’s embellishment, previously referred to as “the little underwear,” has been renamed “The Emily” in honor of Blunt by the design house, according to Paster. The stylist to the stars anticipated a range of reactions to the dress, as fashion is subjective to each individual’s taste.
“Occasionally, we take risks. After spending years with Emily, we have the freedom to have fun with fashion,” stated Paster.
“I was aware that there would be discussion about the shoulder. However, I am not concerned about the opinions of others. In my opinion, those who have an understanding and appreciation for fashion will find it intriguing, but those who prefer more traditional styles will not.”
The day’s end saw her looking incredibly stunning. The dress was simply gorgeous,” Paster added.
