Simple make-up tips to enhance aging skin

While we adjust our clothing to match the changing seasons, our beauty regimen may become monotonous.

It’s simple to accomplish, particularly if you’re familiar with the familiar products and methods.

Carly Utting, a senior artist at cosmetic brand MAC, often gets asked about the best way to apply make-up for adults over the age of 40.

“To be honest, this will appear different from how it was when you were twenty years old.”

As a make-up artist and wearer over the age of 40, Utting shares that she utilizes make-up to accentuate her features and make them appear smoother, fuller, or more distinct.

As we grow older, our skin’s tone may change and we may experience a loss of pigmentation in our lips and cheeks. This is why I place emphasis on these areas when creating a make-up look for a client over the age of 40, explains Utting.

Skin prep

According to Aimee Connolly, a cosmetic expert and the creator of Sculpted by Aimee, achieving a flawless makeup look always begins with proper skin preparation, regardless of your age.

To achieve a smoother application of make-up, it is important to use suitable base products that address your specific skin concerns. This is especially crucial for older skin, where hydration plays a vital role.

Prior to grabbing your cosmetic pouch, Connolly advises providing your skin with necessary nourishment through a velvety serum and moisturizing cream.

One option is to use a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, a key ingredient that can help improve the appearance of the skin and provide lasting radiance.

Coupled with a daily moisturizer high in ceramides, Connolly suggests that your skin’s protective barrier will be fortified and moisture will be sealed in. “This will help your makeup last longer while also keeping your skin nourished.”

Foundation

According to Utting, choosing the right foundation for my skin is similar to finding the ideal pair of jeans. After trying numerous options in the past few years, she suggests going for a foundation that is serum-like or contains beneficial ingredients for the skin.

She explains, “These foundations have multiple benefits, as they both enhance glow and create an even skin tone, all while nourishing the skin during wear.”

Powder

“When applying powder to the skin, choose a finely milled, blurring powder,” suggests Utting. She recommends using MAC Studio Fix Pro Set + Blur Weightless Loose Powder as a top choice for those over the age of 40.

Utting explains that using a soft medium-sized brush with this formula will help to gently blur fine lines and texture, resulting in a smooth and even base.

If the fine lines are too accentuated by packing on powder, using a brush to gently apply it can effectively conceal them.

Blusher

Utting loves to apply a smooth and glowing hue to the cheek area of mature skin. She recommends using MAC’s Glow Play blushers in shades So Natural and Blush Please to achieve a lovely pop of color on the cheeks.

“The formula lends itself perfectly to a skin that requires a little extra TLC, says Utting. “Bouncy and playful, it adds a luminous, healthy, youthful shine.”

Meanwhile, according to Connolly, the Sculpted by Aimee Cream Luxe Blush in Dusty Rose is her preferred shade. She believes it will give a subtle, natural pink glow to the cheeks and nose tip, without being too intense in pigment.

Lips

According to Utting, using a lip primer can help conceal and minimize the appearance of creases and wrinkles that develop on your lips over time. This results in a more even and plump look when you apply your lipstick.

She suggests using a lip liner that is two or three shades darker than your natural lip color to achieve a fuller lip shape. Enhancing the natural lip line can create a more prominent pout.

According to Utting, having a soft shine on the lips can enhance their shape. She suggests applying a layer of gloss on top of any lip color. For best results, choose creamy, non-sticky glosses to maintain their stay and add a lovely shine.

Eyes

Utting states that she always prefers to use long-lasting cream eye products when doing make-up for clients over the age of 40. She specifically enjoys adding a subtle shine to the eyes in order to bring warmth and brightness.

Connolly suggests using a natural bronze eyeshadow on the eyelid to achieve a youthful appearance with a noticeable impact.

“Improve the definition of your eye with a smooth, brown kohl pencil, perfect for a gentler, more defined look.”

She recommends using a double-sided eyeliner with a nude color on one end. This is perfect for making the waterline appear brighter and giving the eyes a youthful look.

Connolly suggests trying a brown mascara for a gentler way to add volume to your lashes.
