The hemlines at Gucci’s Milan Fashion Week display were extremely high, cementing the popularity of super short shorts.
The initial appearance of the fall/winter 2024 collection provided a glimpse of what was in store, featuring a model dressed in a sleek black ensemble consisting of a finely crafted jacket with a belt, short shorts, and thigh-high boots.
The trend of tiny shorts has been consistent, with models sporting tailored options in a variety of colors. Knitted shorts have also been popular, often paired with matching outfits or structured jumpsuits. Short shorts, a staple of the 2000s fashion, have recently made a comeback, particularly with the knitted Miu Miu knickers that have gained attention on social media.
This was Italian designer Sabato De Sarno’s third collection as creative director of Gucci, and he certainly seems to have found his groove – particularly after the mixed response to his first offering a year ago.
He has a minimalist and sexy aesthetic, which is a huge departure from previous creative director Alessandro Michele’s designs, which were much more maximalist – think clashing patterns and Seventies inspirations.
Instead, it appears that De Sarno is drawing inspiration from Tom Ford’s tenure as creative director at Gucci during the 1990s and early 2000s.
In his most recent collection, the designer prominently featured models in sheer tops and short skirts reminiscent of lingerie. The garments were simple yet still infused with a touch of style.
The coats were adorned with glimmering decorations, the jackets featured embossed Gucci logos, and the platform loafers were extremely tall. The accessories were especially stylish – when the models weren’t wearing platforms, they were sporting thigh-high leather boots and carrying traditional Gucci purses with horsebit accents and bamboo handles.
The beauty appearance was also reminiscent of Tom Ford’s Gucci fashion shows in the 1990s, featuring bold black eyeliner and sleek, slicked back hair.
However, do not be mistaken: creative director De Sarno does not view his style as subdued luxury. In a previous interview with Vogue, he stated, “My fashion has been described as minimal and quiet luxury, but to me, it is actually the opposite. The shape of my overcoat is the product of a careful selection process. We tested it and chose it for its wearability. In the end, you may see a simple gray coat, but it is more than that.”
Although the show began and ended with all-black outfits, the color scheme used throughout was anything but dull. De Sarno incorporated a range of colors, from vibrant lime green bags to bold pink shorts, and primarily focused on solid hues.
The color pink has been a popular choice on the runway for a while now, largely due to Valentino and the Barbie movie. However, Gucci has introduced a new “it” shade. Celebrities were seen taking photos in front of a rich burgundy wall, and this hue was prominent throughout the collection in items such as boots, bags, jackets, and even De Sabato’s shoes during the finale.
The event took place at Fonderia Carlo Macchi, a spacious warehouse with an industrial aesthetic that frequently hosts fashion shows.
The Milan Fashion Week always features Gucci as one of its top events, and as usual, the front row was filled with famous faces – many of whom were sporting the brand’s iconic burgundy hue.
After stunning in a bold Gucci ensemble at the Baftas, Daisy Edgar-Jones appeared front and center at the event in a grey dress featuring a plunging V-neckline and sleek black platform heels.
Salma Hayek, an actress whose spouse François-Henri Pinault serves as the president of Kering, the high-end company that possesses Gucci, donned a completely red ensemble consisting of a pencil skirt and a bold, red zip-up jacket without a shirt underneath.
Kirsten Dunst, the lead actress in the soon-to-be-released action movie Civil War, rocked a mature version of the disco trend with her shimmering green and silver dress paired with a burgundy belt.
In the meantime, Julia Garner, who is a representative for Gucci, sported a navy mini dress, while Maude Apatow, known for her role in Euphoria, opted for a more relaxed style with an oversized denim shirt.
