Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week display confirmed the current trend of oversized hats.
During the autumn/winter 2024 presentation, models showcased oversized floppy sun hats in both black and pastel shades. The hats were also embellished with silver hat pins.
Not only was this the only intriguing headwear displayed on the runway, but models also donned flat caps made of tartan.
This is a noteworthy addition for the French fashion brand, considering that flat caps are believed to have originated in England and are usually linked with British and Irish fashion.
Fashion model Gigi Hadid, known for her frequent appearances on the Chanel runway, was among the few models not donning a hat.
She donned a monochromatic ensemble with a black turtleneck and a semi-sheer maxi skirt, accessorized with a thin belt and an abundance of gold jewelry. Her hairstyle included a black ribbon and a white camellia, both iconic emblems of the Chanel brand.
Despite the incorporation of hats by creative director Virginie Viard, who assumed the role following Karl Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019, the remainder of the collection remained consistent with the brand’s typical style.
Many iconic Chanel elements were featured, such as boucle suits, cardigans with bold buttons, and quilted bags in a variety of vibrant hues.
The brand has a signature style of layering gold jewelry, which has been a tradition for years. This was most notably seen when Christy Turlington modeled a black dress and multiple gold chains during the spring/summer 1992 couture show. It was a more formal take on Hadid’s similar style.
Many of the ensembles could easily fit in with the styles of a Nineties Chanel fashion show, but there were also some contemporary details present. These included a blue cropped puffer jacket adorned with a camellia brooch, elements of denim incorporated into the designs, and a calf-length brown coat with a shearling lining that was accompanied by a matching carry-all bag.
The models strolled down the catwalk constructed from dark wood planks, reportedly influenced by the boardwalk in Deauville, a coastal town in Normandy.
Viard looked to the town of Deauville as her main source of inspiration for this season, given its strong connection to the Chanel brand. In fact, in 1913, the brand’s founder, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, established her first fashion boutique in Deauville, solidifying their long-standing relationship.
Ever since, the town has continued to serve as a source of inspiration for seaside references, including notable mentions in Karl Lagerfeld’s autumn/winter 1998 collection.
In 2019, Chanel became a sponsor of the Deauville American Film Festival and their recent collection at Paris Fashion Week emphasized the brand’s connection to the movie industry.
The performance began with a brief monochrome movie featuring Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt. They are shown driving, eating at a restaurant, and strolling by the ocean, prominently displaying a Chanel quilted handbag throughout the scene.
The fashion blogger @stylenotcom mentioned on their Instagram that the short film took inspiration from a scene in the 1966 French film A Man And A Woman (Un Homme Et Une Femme).
Cruz has served as a Chanel ambassador since 2018. She stood out at the 2023 Met Gala by donning a stunning bridal-inspired gown from the brand’s haute couture collection. At the Paris Fashion Week event, she graced the front row in a sleek black leather skirt suit paired with a light yellow sweater and a striking white collar.
She was not the lone celebrity in the front row.
Zoey Deutch, known for her role in Politician, showed off a fresh cropped blonde hairstyle at the event. She paired it with a grey belted mini dress featuring long sleeves and accessorized with a pink camellia brooch.
Actress Margaret Qualley, known for her role in the TV series “Maid,” was seen at the Chanel fashion show wearing a textured yellow coat and mini dress combo, paired with long black socks. This was not her first time strutting down the runway as a Chanel “bride.”
Fellow actor Zazie Beetz, recognized for her role in Atlanta, donned a knitted strapless dress in red, paired with a large black, white, and red cardigan.
