The Milan Fashion Week was abundant in unexpected designs and bold statements, highlighting the unique style not only from Milan but also from other regions.
Here are a few noteworthy events that you might have overlooked over the course of the week…
Baguettes at Moschino
The spotlight was on Adrian Appiolaza, Moschino’s new designer from Argentina, at the 2024 autumn/winter show.
During an interview with Vogue contributor Luke Leitch, he expressed his initial reaction as the new creative director of the fashion house: volume. He acknowledged that one of Franco Moschino’s greatest strengths was his ability to create unique silhouettes.
I began recognizing patterns and recurring preoccupations, and came to the realization that Franco’s imaginative world was not just limited to making clothing, but also involved inventing personalities.
“From my experiences with him, I have learned that clothing is meant to be playful. The work exudes an underlying irony and an uplifting sense of happiness, which I aim to convey in this new phase.”
Appiolaza’s collection was filled with literal inspiration, featuring unique and oversized sweaters, trench coats, denim, and flowy maxi skirts. He also included accessories such as aviator sunglasses, head-wrapped silk scarves, crocodile leather, and cheerful yellow tote bags with smiley faces. The standout pieces were handbags designed to look like baguettes, flowers, and fresh produce, cleverly wrapped in paper grocery bags.
The bakery-inspired clutch bag, which made its debut in 2020, is a three-dimensional leather bag, with a baguette embossed onto it and a gold-plated Moschino logo.
Intense elegance on display at Tom Ford’s fashion event.
As the trusted assistant to renowned designer Tom Ford, British fashion designer Peter Hawkings recently debuted a stylish and streamlined autumn/winter collection.
There were skin-tight black catsuits, deep-plunge gowns, tailored suits for both men and women, embellished and sharp tailored coats, and fur jackets. It was extreme glamour and inspired by Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct – which had been on Hawkings’ mood board “forever”.
During an interview with The Guardian, he mentioned being influenced by “strength and allure – you know, it’s a mix of Françoise Hardy’s edge and the presence of Helmut Newton’s Pola woman.”
I want to evoke the power of glamour through the Tom Ford man/woman, embracing the strength of a woman.
The first row was filled with celebrities, such as Stone, Uma Thurman, Amber Valletta, Eva Green, Alek Wek, Sam Claflin, Iris Law, and Callum Turner.
The trend of mob wives at Dolce & Gabbana is gaining popularity.
The confident and daring attitude of the “mob wife” style was displayed on the Dolce & Gabbana catwalk on Saturday.
The Italian brand incorporated provocative lingerie into their collection, pairing it with well-fitted pieces such as a short black tuxedo jacket, and a transparent skirt with a flowing train, worn over delicate lace underwear.
Naomi Campbell, a 53-year-old British supermodel, was seen wearing a silk grandad hat, net veil, and gloves, without the cropped jacket, as she ended the show. She also recently appeared on the runway for Burberry during London Fashion Week.
The Tuxedo collection featured a large coat made from bird feathers, as well as variations of deconstructed tuxedos with tie-belt accents.
Protest at Fendi
A member of Peta caused a disturbance at the Fendi autumn/winter 2024 fashion show by walking onto the catwalk with a sign stating “Animals are not meant to be used for clothing” and “Reject animal skin” written on their back.
The American non-profit organization for animal rights shared a video on Instagram showing an incident where activists from @petauk interrupted the @fendi #MilanoFashionWeek show. Their caption stated the message that animals are killed for the sake of fashion and they will continue their efforts until all animals are released from the leather and fur industries. #FendiFW24
Since its establishment in 1925, the Italian high-end fashion brand has consistently utilized fur and leather in the design of its clothing.
Peta has also targeted other bigger shows during fashion month, including the recent Coach presentation at New York Fashion Week, where a protester held a sign that said: ‘COACH: Let Cows Live’ as they walked onto the runway.
Stunning handbags available at Bottega Veneta.
Taking inspiration from current events and global affairs, Bottega Veneta’s Matthieu Blazy collection utilized unconventional proportions and silhouettes.
As the models descended the wooden catwalk, resembling a desert scene adorned with cactus-shaped lights, they sported gorgeous handbags. These included a cross-hatch design and an orange clutch bag made of crocodile leather, complementing the outfits that featured strong shoulders, billowy silhouettes, and a nighttime-inspired color scheme.
Famous model Kate Moss was present, along with Salma Hayek, A$AP Rocky, and Julianne Moore.
Diesel brought fashion to the masses
Consistently pursuing his mission to modernize fashion shows since being named creative director in 2020, Glenn Martens extended an invitation to a large audience of the general population to attend the Diesel autumn/winter 2024 show through a virtual platform.
Live-streamed videos of audience members were displayed on the walls, which served as the backdrop for the fashion show. As the models strutted down the runway, they presented all 63 featured outfits.
The collection, focusing on outerwear, pushed boundaries in its innovative use of materials, demonstrating the surprisingly versatile combination of fur and denim in both relaxed and structured coat styles.
Feben embraces inclusivity on the catwalk.
Reworded: Feben, a London-based designer, recently debuted her first fashion show at Milan Fashion Week. Her collection, supported by Dolce & Gabbana’s talent incubator program and focused on highlighting young names in the fashion industry, showcased elegant evening dresses and intricately textured garments.
Exploring the contrast between femininity and masculinity, the fashion designer from Ethiopia and Sweden, who has collaborated with Beyoncé, Erykah Badu, and Michaela Coel among others, presented luxurious and tight-fitting garments, a refined interpretation of outerwear, and bold animal prints that celebrated the excitement of preparing for a night out and the exhilaration of quickly creating a collection.
During an interview with Elle Magazine, Feben discussed the inspiration behind the Speed collection, stating “I was considering the speed at which one must create a collection. The 1990s archive animal prints really resonated with me, as they embody the essence of Dolce & Gabbana.”
The Feben fashion show featured supermodel Ashley Graham wearing a v-neck dress with sheer ruched sleeves.
