Princess Diana’s iconic style in the 80s was a refined combination of draped pearls, mod suits, and tiered frills. In the 90s, she embraced a modern elegance with a touch of casualness in her wardrobe. Her charitable actions and humble demeanor solidified her as an archetype of understated luxury. In season six of The Crown on Netflix, Elizabeth Debicki will portray Princess Diana as the “people’s princess,” capturing her lasting impact on fashion and society.
The Crown has returned with the initial four installments of the concluding episodes. The show offers a fictionalized perspective on the royal family’s past, starting from Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne in the first season and continuing through the tragic passing of Princess Diana in season six. While the actors aim to convey stylized versions of the characters, their clothing has provided viewers with a strikingly realistic depiction.
Amy Roberts and Sidonie Roberts, the wardrobe designers for the show, have carefully selected garments for each actor that reflect the iconic outfits worn by members of the royal family throughout history. Debicki’s portrayal of Diana is especially accurate.
In the first half of season six, which premiered on November 16th, the Roberts duo accurately replicated Diana’s outfits from the summer of 1997 by dressing Debicki in identical ensembles.
In the first episode, Diana is shown vacationing in St Tropez. The dress worn by the real royal on that same trip, a red Catherine Walker dress, is very similar to the one worn by Debicki. Debicki’s costume has a high, square neckline that is representative of 90s fashion, and a double gold buckle waist belt, making it nearly identical to the Walker original. The only difference is the color of the fabric. Diana’s dress was more of a coral red with a hint of orange, while in the show, Debicki’s dress is pinker. However, the large gold clip-on earrings worn by Debicki are an exact match to the real ones.
Because the season majorily recounts Diana’s time in the Mediterranean with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, just before her untimely death, Amy and Sidonie were tasked with dressing Debicki in the many one-piece swimsuits Diana wore that summer.
Sidonie shared with Harper’s Bazaar that Diana wore many swimsuits this year. She can be seen wearing them in four episodes, and most of her outfits for the season were swimsuits.
Diana’s actual leopard print halter-neck, made by Gottex Swimwear, was re-released by the company, therefore allowing the show’s costume to be the exact style and design seen on her. But of Diana’s more illustrious waterproof wear, was her low-back light blue suit worn on Fayed’s yacht. Not only did Debicki favour this particular one-piece out of all her wardrobe changes throughout season six, but the designer pair were especially determined to do the bodysuit justice – which they did.
Sidonie commented, “The blue swimsuit has become a symbol. The image of her sitting at the end of the plank is so well-known that when an actor wears it, they truly embody their character.”
Diana wore Gottex swimsuits multiple times in season six, as seen on Debicki.
While filming in the sparkly, aqua-hued swimsuit, Debicki expressed, “There was a special significance to that swimsuit and reenacting that moment. It was crucial that we captured it accurately.”
She explained to Harper’s Bazaar that as an actress, she strives to enter into the space of the real imagery and accurately portray the emotions in that moment.
