England’s Euro 2024 squad LIVE: Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire miss out

Wembley send-off

Having played Bosnia at Newcastle’s St James’ Park on Monday, England will bid farewell under the Wembley arch.

A sold-out crowd will cheer on Southgate and his side before they pack up to head to their training camp in central Germany – cue paper planes and Mexican waves should things not go to plan against Iceland.

Maddison and Grealish void to be filled

The most eye-catching omissions from Southgate’s 26-man squad were James Maddison and Jack Grealish – who miss out after struggling for form towards the end of the season.

With two big names now absent in Germany, the likes of Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer and Jarrod Bowen are looking for the chance to impress.

Guehi to make his Marc

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is now likely to be in Southgate’s starting XI for the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16.

He played alongside Lewis Dunk in Monday’s friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina but – with Harry Maguire missing out through injury – could now be looking to form a partnership that could lead England into the tournament and beyond.

Euro 2024 is almost upon us, 24 nations having qualified each with a guaranteed three matches to play in the group stage – but a handful of them dreaming of going the distance, hopeful of playing a full seven matches and triumphing in Berlin on 14 July.

Another summer of football action will see the likes of England, Spain, France and hosts Germany all go head to head across the course of a month, each hoping to be the country which displaces Italy as reigning continental champions.

James Maddison, who went to the 2022 World Cup but did not make an appearance and has won seven caps in total, admitted he was “devastated” to be left out and felt he could have brought “something different” to the squad.

He wrote on social media: “Devastated doesn’t quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.

“I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.

“I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home.”

One thing’s for sure, England have a midfield muddle to solve. Gareth Southgate admits he has a dilemma in who to choose alongside Declan Rice in England’s midfield at Euro 2024, and here we explore some of the options:

The West Ham forward is “trying to impress” when given a chance, and said: “I’m a really family-orientated man – my mum, my dad, my brothers, my sisters, everyone. I had my brother and dad here (at the game). Hereford to Newcastle’s not an hour away, it’s a long old way.

“For me, family is the most important thing and of course it gives you that drive. From where I’ve come from to go to a major tournament would be the pinnacle, but of course there’s a lot that goes into that to get to that stage.

“But for me, when I’m here I’m learning and trying to impress when I get that opportunity.”

He added: “The striking options we have here are elite, you look at Harry (Kane), Ollie (Watkins), Ivan (Toney) and so on. I know my position, I played out on the wing all my career, maybe that’s a good thing because competition with strikers here is probably one of the best.”

Bowen had another important campaign for the Hammers in the Premier League this season, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances as they finished ninth, and he is determined to keep playing his own game as he aims to secure a ticket to Germany.

“Speaking personally, I’m here on merit for what I’ve done since I’ve been at West Ham,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s about finding that balance where, yes you want to impress, but you also don’t want to do too much, you want to play your own game that got you here in the first place.

“For me it’s staying on that path and staying with that mindset.”

Jarrod Bowen admits being involved in a major tournament with England would be “the pinnacle” of his career as he waits to discover if he will be part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the European Championship.

Boss Southgate has until midnight on Friday to name his final squad for the tournament in Germany and England’s final preparations got under way with a 3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a warm-up clash at St James’ Park on Monday night.

They have one more friendly against Iceland on Friday before kicking off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16.

Southgate gave a host of players the opportunity to lay claim for a spot in Monday’s clash, including Bowen, who started the game as his father and brother watched on in the crowd.
