On Sunday, a large protest took place in Amsterdam with tens of thousands of participants calling for increased efforts to combat climate change. This demonstration occurred just 10 days before a national election.
The organizers stated that 70,000 individuals participated in the march and referred to it as the largest climate demonstration ever in the Netherlands.
Greta Thunberg, an activist, was one of the individuals strolling through the old center of Amsterdam. She and Frans Timmermans, a former EU climate leader who now heads a center-left coalition in the election, were scheduled to speak to a crowd at a square near the famous Rijksmuseum.
The Climate Crisis Coalition stated, “We are currently facing multiple crises that have arisen due to political decisions. However, there is potential for change and it must be pursued in a different manner.”
The group of demonstrators consisted of various ages and included members of the Fridays for Future youth movement. There was also a significant presence of medical professionals in white coats, holding a banner that read: “Climate emergency = health emergency.”
“I am a doctor who specializes in the medical care of children. I am advocating for the rights of young individuals,” stated Laura Sonneveld. “Children are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.”
Addressing the issue of climate change is a crucial aspect for political parties participating in the November 22nd general election.
Margje Weijs, a Spanish teacher and youth coach, expressed the need for us to voice our opposition to government decisions. She hopes that this will have an impact on the upcoming election.
