Karlie Kloss has finally commented on her viral Met Gala moment where she stated she was “facing camp head-on” but may have missed the mark.
In 2019, the Met Gala’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” inspired by Susan Sontag’s essay of the same name. The famous attendees went all out with their fashion choices – Lady Gaga even changed her outfit four times just on the red carpet, and Jared Leto made a statement with a custom Gucci suit and a replica of his own head.
Karlie Kloss, the model for Victoria’s Secret, gave a preview of her highly-anticipated outfit on Instagram before making her appearance on the red carpet. She captioned her photo with “Confronting camp head on,” and the picture showed Kloss intently looking into a compact mirror.
When she got to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City with her husband, Joshua Kushner, her outfit choice was not quite in line with the theme. Instead, Kloss opted for a metallic gold mini-dress with black puffed sleeves created by Dapper Dan for Gucci – a more understated look compared to the extravagant ensembles worn by other guests at the Met Gala. However, this moment has now become one of the most popular memes on the internet and has even become a representation of camp itself.
The 31-year-old model recently discussed her viral meme from an Instagram post in a video for Vogue released on November 8th. In the video, she reflected on some of her iconic fashion moments, including the 2019 Met Gala.
Kloss expressed, while viewing the iconic picture, “I caused quite a stir at the Met Gala. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for a positive reason. Even now, I receive criticism for my ‘camp’ look and it’s deserved.”
“I’ll agree to it. To be honest, I earned that one,” she confessed.
On November 8th, the organizers of the 2024 Met Gala revealed that the chosen theme will be “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. This fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute will revolve around 50 notable fashion pieces, including some that are too delicate to be worn again, known as the “Sleeping Beauties”.
Around 250 pieces will be selected from the Costume Institute’s permanent archive, showcasing creations by Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Givenchy to represent four centuries of fashion evolution.
The theme drew inspiration from two delicate items dating back to 1877 which are no longer wearable: a bodice from the Elizabethan era and a ball gown made of silk satin by American designer Charles Frederick Worth.
The showcase will have a significant emphasis on promoting sustainability in the fashion industry. It will be structured into three distinct “zones” – land, sea, and sky – each representing the eco-friendly materials used to make clothing.
In May, the 2023 Met Gala chose to pay tribute to the late iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld with the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. During the event, Kloss surprised her supporters by announcing her second pregnancy with Kushner. She proudly displayed her growing belly in a stylish black Loewe dress created by Jonathan Anderson.
Kloss gave birth to her second son, Elijah Jude, only two months after. The pair, who tied the knot in 2018, also have a two-year-old son named Levi Joseph.
