Universitario Deportes is requesting for punishments to be given to Alianza Lima following a power outage during their Peruvian league championship celebration at their opponent’s stadium, which resulted in the cancellation of the awarding ceremony.
On Wednesday, Universitario secured their 27th league title by defeating city rivals Alianza 2-0, giving them a 3-1 aggregate win.
However, just as the celebrations were about to begin, the lights suddenly went out at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium. Universitario condemned this as both shameful and hazardous.
The Universitario stated that the authorities should take action against those accountable. They believe that a sporting event should not be marred by shameful occurrences.
During the derby, our team, staff, and support group were put in harm’s way. The award ceremony was interrupted by turning off the lights, and while they were off, the staff of Alianza Lima attempted to harm our celebrating team members who had just won the game.
The club announced that the ceremony for the award will take place on Sunday at their home stadium, Monumental U.
Alianza announced that they had deactivated the lights in order to expedite the evacuation of the stands and ensure the safety of both the audience and the teams.
The 25-time champions stated that Alianza Lima is a respected institution that values sportsmanship and prioritizes the safety of fans, athletes, and sports professionals during events.
We recognize that this action may have been interpreted differently, but the club’s sole intention was to prevent unfortunate circumstances… We apologize for any inconvenience caused to attendees and supporters in general.
Alianza stated that they will collaborate with the authorities following the announcement by the Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office on their Twitter account that an investigation has been launched regarding the power outage.
Universitario playfully mocked their competitors’ actions on social media and also pointed out the number of league titles they have won.
“Bid farewell to unexpected occurrences, do not be left without power during your festivities,” stated the club.
“Get our anti-blackout light bulb and prevent any awkward moments at home. Keep in mind that it has 27 times the strength of a regular bulb.”
