There is increasing pressure for Rishi Sunak to dismiss Suella Braverman as a result of a heated dispute regarding the home secretary’s controversial statement accusing the police of exhibiting bias.
George Osborne has cautioned Mr Sunak that he may appear ineffective if he does not dismiss Ms Braverman, and chancellor Jeremy Hunt is the most recent minister to distance himself from her remarks.
Ms. Braverman’s position is in jeopardy following a statement from Downing Street stating that they did not authorize a controversial article in which she accused the Metropolitan Police of showing bias towards left-wing demonstrations, specifically a pro-Palestinian march scheduled for this Saturday, Armistice Day.
In recent days, Ms. Braverman has been involved in yet another controversy surrounding her actions. She has referred to the protests as “hate marches”, stated that individuals choose to be homeless, and suggested limiting the use of tents by those sleeping on the streets.
A member of the Conservative party, who holds a high position, criticized Ms Braverman’s contentious article in the Times as being “utterly unacceptable” on Friday morning. They also suggested that the Prime Minister should have a significant discussion with her regarding her future.
A previous member of the cabinet stated, “It is clear that she is provoking Sunak to dismiss her immediately.”
According to former attorney general Dominic Grieve’s article in The Independent, the home secretary has compromised the autonomy of the police force and used Remembrance Day ceremonies for her own political agenda. It is imperative that she is not permitted to represent us at the Cenotaph this Sunday.
