Gisele Bundchen shared details of a life-threatening incident she encountered during her modelling career in the late 1990s.
The 43-year-old model shared that she came close to losing her life while doing a photoshoot on a real iceberg in Iceland. On an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Bündchen played “True Confessions” where she had to recount the event while host Jimmy Fallon and guest Wayne Brady tried to guess its validity.
“I participated in a photo shoot on an artificial iceberg in Iceland and I almost slipped and fell into the ocean,” Bündchen stated, referencing a card. She went on to clarify that the purpose of the shoot was to advertise Lanvin’s Oxygene fragrance and that it occurred in either 1997 or 1998.
The woman, who had two children, found herself in the midst of actual icebergs. She expressed that if she had fallen into the ocean, she would have perished immediately. “Do you understand the danger of being submerged in the icy waters of an iceberg? In just seconds, you’re gone – dead!” she declared.
After verifying the occurrence of the incident, Bündchen proceeded to clarify that she was wearing a slip dress while crew members on a boat were dressed in life vests and puffer jackets during the shoot.
She said, “However, I am still alive.”
The model’s career has soared to even bigger heights since her nearly disastrous photoshoot more than 25 years ago. She became a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 1999 until 2006, and went on to become the highest-paid model in the world for 15 years running, according to Forbes.
Bündchen retired from professional modelling in 2015, after starting her career when she was just 14 years old. At the time, she was focused on raising her two children – son Benjamin, born 2009, and daughter Vivian, born 2012 – with her then-husband, Tom Brady. The model and the former New England Patriots quarterback were married in 2009, but shocked the world when they announced their divorce in October 2022.
During a recent interview with Robin Roberts called “IMPACT x Nightline: Gisele Bündchen: Climbing the Mountain,” Bundchen became emotional when discussing her divorce from her husband of 13 years. She began crying and asked for a moment to gather herself, turning away from the camera. “I apologize, I just need a moment,” she requested.
During the interview, Roberts inquired about Bündchen’s experience co-parenting her two children with Brady. Bündchen responsed, “Some days are easier than others, and I can only control my own actions.”
Recently, it has been speculated that the model is in a romantic relationship with her jiu-jitsu instructor, Joaquim Valente. In an interview with Vanity Fair in March of 2023, Bündchen openly discussed her connection with Valente for the first time.
“I fear that due to my divorce, people may try to connect me to any rumors, including the one about me dating him,” she stated, addressing speculations about their relationship. “I am incredibly appreciative of the support and guidance I have received from him and the others. They have not only been there for me and my children, but have also become dear friends, especially Joaquim.”
He is our educator, and more importantly, he is someone I look up to and have confidence in. It’s wonderful to have that kind of positivity and have my children surrounded by it.
